HMAS Sydney II Memorial is a deeply moving site with stunning design elements and a cool view from the top. We arrived at 10:30 in the morning, just in time for a guided tour. The guide provided an excellent explanation of the memorial's significance and the tragic history it commemorates, a truly sad chapter in Australian history.
The central attraction is the Dome of Souls, an inspiring structure made up of 645 stainless steel seagulls (Silver Gulls) representing the crew of the Sydney. The birds are symbolic of the spirits of the departed, symbolizing the soul freed from the body, ascent into heaven, and a higher state of consciousness. The dome beautifully encapsulates the moment, frozen in time and space. There has been a lot of thought put into the design and the layout with concentric circles, domes spheres and a lot of symbolism in what has been chosen to represent each different part of the memorial.

Read moreBeing a Geraldton born and bred boy, I am extremely proud of this Memorial. I have travelled the world and would rate this as world class. The view over the coastline, the dome construction and the significance of each seagull that forms it (A lost life for each seagull), the placing and direction of the lady waiting and watching (Placed prior to the wreck being found, she faces the exact direction of the final wresting place). The reflection pond with the location and coordinates of the final resting place of the Sydney, The gigantic hull section, the granite etched walls with all of the names and the story. This if you take a while to look around and take in the story is just an amazing place to pay homage to the fallen Sailors that lost their lives that day. This was a wonderful vision with brilliant workmanship. Kudos Geraldton,...
