Brighton Bathing Boxes are a unique and iconic feature along the sandy shores of Brighton Beach in Melbourne, Australia. These colorful wooden huts line the beachfront and have become a symbol of the area. The bathing boxes are a popular tourist attraction and are frequently photographed for their vibrant and eye-catching designs. Originally built in the 19th century as changing facilities for beachgoers, the bathing boxes have since evolved into small, individually owned beachside properties. They are primarily used by local residents as private storage spaces for beach equipment and a place to relax while enjoying the beach. Each bathing box is distinct, showcasing a variety of different colors, patterns, and decorations. Some owners have adorned their boxes with intricate artworks, murals, or personalized designs, making each one a unique and creative expression of the owner's taste. While the bathing boxes themselves cannot be rented or used for accommodation, they add charm and character to Brighton Beach, creating a picturesque scene against the backdrop of the blue ocean and golden sand. Visitors often take leisurely walks along the beach to admire and photograph these iconic structures, capturing the essence of the Brighton coastline.

Stepping onto Brighton Beach, I was immediately captivated by the whimsical allure of the iconic Brighton Beach Boxes. Despite the brisk winds and cloudy skies, the vibrant array of 93 beach huts stood proudly, each one boasting its own unique personality and charm. As a tourist, I couldn't help but feel drawn to these colorful structures, which serve as a beloved symbol of the area's rich history and cultural heritage. Despite the weather, the beach was relatively quiet, allowing me to soak in the tranquility and beauty of the surroundings. The close proximity to the city skyline provided a striking backdrop, further enhancing the appeal of this picturesque spot. Whether you're seeking relaxation or adventure, the Brighton Beach Boxes offer a delightful blend of nostalgia, beauty, and serenity that is sure to leave a lasting impression. A visit to these cherished landmarks is an absolute must for any traveler exploring the vibrant city of Melbourne.

This is a much improved area compared to 10 years ago I was there where it is all sand as you walk down the beach and there was no structure other than the beach bath boxes. It is a bonus that they also have toilets now apart from the decks, stairs and ramps. Not to mention the pavilion and cafe. This is a very nice area to walk along the beach, relax and have the good old fish and chips picnic on the sand. Scenery never changed, the calm water and horizon while buildings from afar on the west side. It was a Saturday and quite busy. I supposed it was because the area is well improved now and people have better areas to hang around plus the cafe that made it really convenient. Parking is limited and there is a wait time and has fee. Dogs are allowed on leash. There are poo bags around.

Romantic and Iconic, the Bathing Boxes, located along the Esplanade in Brighton (Tip - park in Norwood Ave or Kinane Street at the Southern end) - are indeed a magical masterpiece and one of Melbourne's must visit destinations. There is always something new to discover with every visit - As the boxes get repainted in different colours and the weather changes, so do the tourists, who are endlessly enchanted by this spot. - Currently about 90-ish boxes and now heritage listed (since 2000). The first bathing box was built in the 1860's, with the last one being sold for around $400,000.00. You need about 30 - 45 minutes here - then head off to either North point cafe or over to Mazi restaurant for coffees/lunch - both places are excellent. - Hamish John Appleby // APPLEBY PHOTOGRAPHY
