Caulfield Park is a curated space, and these photos are only half of it. There are three playgrounds, a number of ovals, cricket nets, basketball hoops, exercise stations, the rotunda, numerous picnic spots with cover and electric bbqs, a lake, lawn bowls club, tennis courts, public toilets, off-leash dog area, and lots of parking on the surrounding roads and limited parking within the grounds.
A mostly gravel path surrounds the park; it's about 2 km in length and is populated by runners, joggers, people walking, kids on bikes, and the occasional wheelchair. There are also paths through the park and the ones toward the Hawthorn Road side are somewhat covered by tree canopy. That area also has most of the lawn, making it a popular spot in nice weather for sitting on blankets, lying in the grassy, or undertaking various types of exercise (very occasionally trapeze ropes are strung up between trunks of trees and performers with exquisite balance practice not falling off).
The landscape is mostly flat, with a hillock in the south east corner the only substantial rise in the terrain, so walking around is not challenging. And if you are in need of refreshment, the cafes on Hawthorn Road are close-by. As are a number of tram stops and even Malvern Station, which makes Caulfield Park public transport accessible.
Overall, this is a well used and well tended space for people...
Read moreLuscious and leafy Caulfield Park located at - 280 Balaclava Rd, Caulfield North - is somewhat of a partially hidden gem. Walking through it - is a very relaxing experience and one that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe would have enjoyed. It has a bit of everything, including a lot of 100+ year old trees, ponds and lots of ducks to go with it. Walkers and joggers enjoy the 3.7 sand tan track that runs around the perimeter, whilst children love the paths, play areas and nature in the interior. There is an 'official' off leash area for dogs - you read between the lines - let's just say it appears to be quite a dog friendly vibe all round. There is a serious war memorial adorning the three words of - Palestine, Egypt and Gallipoli - built in 1932 - towering out of the Western parkland. This park provides a whacking amount of shade and is refreshingly quiet even though it is surrounded by busy streets. A great spot for that first or second date as well! Grab food and coffees from the neary cafe (of which there are many) - and discover for yourself what makes this park so perfect. - Hamish John Appleby //...
