Living in the depths of north-side Melbourne, I only dreamed of what mysteries lay to the south of the Yarra. But when my fellow socialists spoke of a place of delicious treasures across the watery divide, I knew that I must investigate. What I discovered opposite the old Nando's site was a wee ресторан (restaurant pronounced 'restoran' in a thick Russian accent) that filled my belly and warmed my heart. I was tickled pink/red by the immense selection of delicious alcoholic beverages, but was brought to my knees by the one weakness I have in this world (other than my love for the Party): сыр (cheese pronounced 'syr' in a thick Russian accent). What a feast I found myself in! Block after block, I was drawn further and further into what I can only describe as some sort of madness. I felt entranced by the strange combination of experiences, falling deeper into a state confusion, but rolling around my head in a state of euphoria... I knew what I must do. I called for my bill and promptly left, heading immediately toward my destination. The river water was cold, but I felt only the afterglow of creamy brie, complex cheddar, spicy and fragrant blue. I felt my thinned-blood humming with energy and as I floated out into Port Phillip Bay I began to swim. After powering through the Tasman Sea, I made my way up the stony shore of New Zealand's West Coast and fell into the cool embrace of native fern forest. I was home, exhausted but content that I had achieved something that was beyond north-side /south-side dichotomies, and left / right politics. Here I could die happy, thankful for the elation that Shadowboxer Bar and Kitchen had brought into my world. Na...
Read moreFirst time trying a Greek restaurant and I couldn’t have picked a better spot. I went to Astoria Bar Ké Grill with a group of friends, and from the moment we walked in, the place made a strong impression. The space has this elegant yet relaxed atmosphere. It’s modern and stylish, but still warm and inviting. You feel instantly comfortable, like you’re in for a good night.
The service was on point the entire time. Friendly, professional, and you can tell the staff genuinely care about the food and the experience they’re offering. We never felt rushed, and they were more than happy to explain the dishes and help us pick the right wine.
Speaking of wine, the one we had was surprisingly good. Easy to drink, balanced, and a perfect match for the food. You could tell it wasn’t just added to the menu randomly. It felt selected with intention, like everything else they do.
Now, the food. Everything we ordered tasted super fresh. The meats were cooked perfectly, tender and full of flavor with just the right touch of char. The use of lemon, herbs, and spices gave every bite a bright, vibrant lift. Everything was balanced and well-prepared. Nothing felt too heavy or overdone, just really good food made with care.
The overall experience had this effortless flow to it. Great food, great wine, a beautiful setting, and a team that knows how to make you feel welcome. I’ll definitely be...
Read moreI came here on recommendation of a friend, maybe i was set up for an over expectation. We ordered the banquet and it was so disappointing. The first plate, dips and pickled octopus with bread was a highlight, being Greek myself the tarama dip was one of the best ive tasted, this over all was a great dish, saganaki was great also which you can't mess up as well as salt and pepper squid. the prawns were horrible, super fishy tasting, never had such bad prawns in my life, the chicken skewers for the main were either a mixture of burnt or undercooked, Thank God for the potatoes which made up for the terrible chicken which was full of fat and horrible. Yuvetsi was delicious, followed by disappointing desert, why would you serve two of the same dessert when we requested another one, and my espresso martini was horrible, must have been on tap or via a can. This is melbourne make your cocktails fresh yourself. Thank God theres real cocktail bars on Chappel Street for post drinks. dish sizes were small. I would never recommend this establishment to other Greeks. Philhelene all the way still as the best Greek in Melbourne. Btw I have nothing to do with Philhelene but it's the level I compare all Greek to...
