The Newport Railway Museum is located on Champion Road, Newport, Victoria, near the North Williamstown station.
The museum opened on 10 November 1962, after the Australian Railway Historical Society (ARHS) Victorian Division was allocated space at Newport Workshops by the Victorian Railways to develop a collection of steam locomotives that were then in the process of being replaced by diesel and electric locomotives.
Following a safety audit by VicTrack, the landlord and owner of most of the exhibits, the museum closed in February 2010. After various improvements, it reopened in March 2014.
On 16 June 2020, it was announced that the ARHS had withdrawn from the operation of the museum and a new group, Newport Railway Museum Inc., formed by museum volunteers, had entered into an arrangement with VicTrack to take over the Museum site lease.
The museum's regular opening hours are between 12 noon and 5 pm on Saturdays. During school holiday periods, the museum opens on both Saturdays and Sundays, between 12 noon and 5 pm.
The museum contains the largest existing collection of Victorian Railways steam locomotives, a wide range of other Victorian Railways rolling stock, and numerous Victorian Railways artefacts. The collection includes:
seventeen steam locomotives eight diesel locomotives two electric locomotives and four electric suburban carriages five country/interstate passenger carriages ten freight wagons and two guards vans five railway cranes rail tractors and postal trolleys a signal box an O scale...
Read moreToo difficult to get to for any body handicapped or with walking difficulties. Signage from the nearest station was non existence so after getting withing several hundred metres, we decided that the challenges were too difficult. It is worth mentioning that i was following the Google navigator directions which do not direct you to North Williamstown station but rather the station before this and then attempts to direct you on foot to museum. Since i got off at the station as per instructions, i found that there were not signage directing people from this station to museum.. you assumption that people will get off at North Williamstown is in error and therefore any signage at that location is invalid. I repeat that i was on foot and as a pedestrian following instruction...
Read moreI went to the museum about a month ago and the experience was alright. The E236 and Heavy Harry locomotives were my favorites. But I have a few problems with this museum; Most engines and rolling stocks are exposed to the elements, meaning they can sustain damage, but some are protected by roofs, but I feel that should be applied to all other exhibits. My second gripe is that some exhibits have suffered damage due to them being out in the open, D4 268 is a good example of this. Other than a coat of primer on the smokebox, the engine doesn't seem to show any other form of restoration. If nothing is done to restore the entire thing, the engine could be long gone in a few years.
That was my review on Newport Museum, good museum to walk through but needs...
