Gelato Messina Newtown — Attraction in Sydney

I recently visited Gelato Messina Newtown and had the pleasure of speaking with Andres, the manager, about my concerns regarding cross contamination. As a Muslim, I try my best to follow halal dietary practices. A couple of years ago, I had confirmed with the Parramatta and Brighton-Le-Sands branches that there was cross contamination during the production process, so I decided to stop purchasing ice cream from Messina altogether.

However, from time to time I still visit different branches to check if anything has changed. At Newtown, Andres took the time to explain in detail the cleaning procedures they follow in between production to ensure no cross contamination occurs. He spent nearly 20 minutes walking me through the process, reassuring me that their gelato is safe for both the Muslim and Kosher communities.

I really appreciate the patience, clarity, and professionalism Andres showed. He was a wonderful representative of the Messina brand, and thanks to him I feel confident about returning. I will definitely be bringing my family back to this Newtown store to enjoy halal-friendly ice cream...

Overpriced Australian garbage. Small servings, poor customer service and zero queue management. Staff seemed quite rude and discriminatory. First time, the store was fairly empty, they took my friend’s order and pretended I wasn’t there. The second time, both staff had seen me waiting in their store for ages but didn’t serve me and instead served all the “Aussie” people who walked in later. When I tried to flag them down they pretended that I jumped the queue and ignored me. Don’t be fooled by their claim of using their own ingredients either, of all the gelato stores in Sydney this was the only one that tasted awful and artificial. A Chef friend insisted on dragging me here. Overcrowded, under-lit, understaffed, and as hot as a sauna. So many people you could not see what was on offer, and the fact it's dark did not help either (a local guide reviewing here has dubbed this 'romantic' ambience, seriously?). In the end you have to choose from what you can see and get a golf ball size serve for about five dollars. Very good ice cream but the experience is overrated.
