Food: ramen is mid and not worth the $28. It's unmemorable and the meat slices were rather thick in my bowl. I also had the snake beans which were considerably nicer as they were well seasoned and stir fried well.

Service: The service on the night was lovely with the server going above and beyond to cater for my split payment request. However, the frustration with trying to inquire about a large group booking left a sour taste.

Went there once to try it out and tried to enquire about a large group booking at another time. Below is about the latter

Service: tldr; RSW is not experienced in arranging large group reservations which may be expected from a small-mid sized restuarant. If you're considering the restuarant for a very large booking, contact them at least a month in advance with your number of guests and expect quite a bit of back and forth. FYI, for a booking of 35 people on a Friday night for 2 hours, they required a minimum spend of $4000. Details: I was inquiring about a booking for a group of 35 people and they were reluctant to accept the booking as they had poor prior experiences with large group bookings (fair enough!). I had suggested various solutions to the reasons for their reluctance but they still seemed reluctant and asked to call back (i.e. a minimum spend to make sure they turn a profit and I would pay the final fee at the end of the night to avoid the hassle of split fees). They said they'd get back to me but I never got the call unless there were issues with my telco. I called and texted to follow up to which they finally responded by saying "unfortunately we cannot do a group of that size without a minimum spend" which is what I had initially suggested... It was very frustrating especially since I unsuccessfully tried to call on multiple consecutive days to try and follow up and it wasn't until I double texted that I received a follow up response. I ended up going to a...

We went today for lunch based on the high ratings on here and it was the first and last time for us at this establishment. I walked in with kids and the lady behind the bar at the entry first shooed away the waitress coming to talk to us and then proceeded to tell us we need to be on a waitlist for next 15 mins.. I went out and 2 mins later my husband (who had been parking) went in to get the menu and was ushered straight to the table by another waiter, lo and behold, there were atleast 15 seats empty, which mostly stayed empty for the entire hour we were there so no, there weren’t reservations. I got a message 30mins later from the lady to come in for our meal as she didn’t see us being seated already. At the end of our meal, I did share this feedback with her; instead of an apology, I got this nugget ‘we can’t have people if we can’t have people’, and she literally walked away while I was still speaking, I’m sorry if my complaint was inconvenient. Let’s talk about food now.. husband’s pork belly was good, my veggie ramen was nothing to write home about, chef went overboard with the chillies, it was so hot I couldn’t finish it and I’m a hot sauce person! Daughter’s karaage chicken was forgotten (in their words they didn’t get the order, interesting since it’s app ordering and payment sure went in) and it finally came half an hour in when the rest of us had finished our meal. We couldn’t wait to get out of there, and that’s not what you want to feel when you want to have some good time at a meal! With so many amazing restaurants in the heart of Newtown (who actually want you dining there!), do yourself a favour and...

This restaurant is such a unique and awesome concept, with a motorcycle workshop on the first floor and a ramen joint on the second floor.

We ordered the pork and ginger gyozas and the darkness ramen. For drinks we had the Hayabusa cocktail and the Gin&Gin.

The gyozas were amazing and paired so nicely with the XO sauce. It had a great texture and the filling was almost melt in your mouth.

The ramen was a bit disappointing, especially because the restaurant’s specialty was the ramen. The broth was alright, the pork belly was nice and tender. I am a bit of a ramen connoisseur myself so I could tell right away that the noodles used were not proper ramen noodles, but egg noodles. This wasn’t a big deal but I did question the authenticity of the ramen. The menma was also very salty compared to the rest of the ramen. Though, the manager did explain that the kitchen had left it in the salt for too long so this may have just been a one-time thing. Overall, the ramen was very subpar and didn’t feel that flavoursome.

The cocktails were nice and I liked that the bar stocked all Australian beers, wines and spirits. It would have been cool to see some Japanese whiskies to go along with the theme but otherwise no problems with the cocktails.

The service was exceptional. The manager sat us down immediately and explained the menu to us. He also let us have a look inside the workshop despite it being outside of workshop hours.

Overall, the experience was good but could’ve been better due to the food. The concept is great, and I hope that the restaurant improves...

First off, I wanna talk about the Gyoza. I'm reading the reviews and I think the Gyoza doesn't get enough attention because me and my friends agree that it's THE BEST GYOZA WE'VE EVER HAD! It's so tender and so soft and it melts into your mouth. The Light ramen was delicious! The broth and noodles were awesome and all the condiments such as the pork truly epitomises and upholds it's Light ramen name with such tenderness and softness. The Darkness ramen has a unique broth to it and although it was nice, I would much prefer the Light ramen. Although, The Darkness is there for your ramen adventures if you wanna try something a bit new with a sort of sweet taste to the broth. And of course, I have to mention the mushroom in both dishes. I don't know what mushroom it is but it wasn't my cup of tea. I found it to overpower whatever condiments I am having alongside the broth and noodles in the ramen. It was too sweet for me to belong there but if you can avoid that mushroom, I think that the Ramen would be fantastic. The service is great and are open to explaining the dishes on the menu. The vibe of the restaurant is pretty cool with a motorbike themed look, matching the motorbike repair shop downstairs. I found the toilet to be very unique as well by having a sink on the toilet. This would make it very convenient and it made it very cool. Also, this place is PERFECT for a catch up or meet up with a friend for lunch! PS: please please never remove the fuel levels on the ramen bowls. They are such a neat thing to look at and such fun!

Rising Sun Workshop is located in a side street off King St, Newtown. Attached to a community funded garage that runs workshops where people can learn how to fix their motor bikes, this cafe is a cool space with its decor industrial and all things motorcycle. When you enter there is an open space with a garage totally separated from the cafe but allowing you to see all of the action. The cafe itself spans two storeys, with plenty of space upstairs. On our day of visit, around 10:30 it was pretty much full up. The cafe is operating via a QR system, where you order your food off the app and the staff deliver it to you. The staff are relaxed and friendly. The menu is predominately ramen and other Japanese influenced dish. On our visit, there were a number of dishes that got our attention. We opted for their signature dish, the breakfast ramen, which was superb. The breakfast ramen is not just a gimmick, it actually tastes like breakfast. Buttered toast broth with bacon, eggs and tomato. We added a side of corn to it. No wonder this dish is popular, can’t recommend it enough. In addition to this we had the Hirasmasa Kingfish Tataki, beautifully marinating in Japanese Mayo atop a yuzu pickled fennel and served with tapioca crisps. A light and refreshing option and a generous portion too. The coffee by single O was nice, and we had a few coffees with our brekkie, as well as a thick choc chip cookie! No wonder this place scored a one hat in the Good Food Guide!

I’ve been to Japan 5-6 times. I’ve also been to hundreds of ramen places throughout New Zealand, Australia, China and HongKong. And never in my life have I ever had a ramen that was just so specifically designed to be as bad as possible. No this is actually hands down, the worst ramen place I’ve ever been to. Let’s rewind, I came here because of a coupon I received from a rising sun advertisement on Facebook. Hopes were high as the reviews this place had on Google seemed overwhelmingly positive. Unfortunately, I ended up being extremely disappointed (understatement of the year) by the food and service. Not only did the staff members refuse to accept the coupon I had (until the manager was brought forth) but the food was also extremely bland. There was zero richness/umami/flavor in my ramen broth (it just tasted like salted water with soy sauce??), the bacon tasted burnt, the tomatoes were raw (and extremely out of place in opinion???) and worst of all; the noodles were UNDERCOOKED. And I’m not talking about slightly undercooked either, I mean they’re ROCK HARD AND CRUNCHY as indicated in the pictures (how do you even miss up boiling ramen anyway? It takes like zero effort to make). Your 28$ would be more well spent on eating instant ramen seasoned with corrugated metal than the ramen served at the Rising Sun Workshop (please also change the name of this place, it’s a disgrace to Japanese cuisine).
