The Domain is a large city park that starts around the Art Museum and goes north to the harbour. It includes the Royal Botanic Gardens (southern part of the park), a stage and large lawn for entertainment, a couple small sport fields, and walkways that let you walk around the point that it is situated on, along the harbour front.
Across from the walkway to the east is Garden Island, where you can see activities related to Navy ships (the island is a navy base). Warning: that walkway is very popular with Officeworks for lunchtime jogs.
The northernmost point features Mrs. Macquarie's chair, which is a lookout over the harbour.
The western side of the point faces the Opera House, and is home to the Handa Opera for part of the year.
Much of the Domain is reasonably accesdible, however some parts involve uneven stairs, particularly at the northern end. Additionally, the northern end is quite the hike for a limited mobility person arriving via public transport, because buses do not go that far down. You can, however, take a taxi to the Domain and have them drop you off at the northern end.
The grounds are fairly pristinely kept, unlike the other notable CBD park, Hyde Park. I've subtracted a star only because of the difficulty for a limited mobility person (who can walk limited distances but not too steadily) to access the picturesque northern side without...
Read more25/12/2024: This exceedingly beautiful & large public green space is right in the heart of town & often hosts brilliant music (& other) events. A bazillion stars to whomever arranged the audio for tonight’s (Christmas Day) concert: I wasn’t able to make it yet I got to hear the loveliness simply by sitting on a bench in Hyde Park on way home, for free. This place is an essential public asset of Sydney & it hosts numerous wonderful events (my only wish is there are more!). I live in Yurong St Darlinghurst & I’m always ELATED when I get to hear music coming from this magnificent place. The following message is purely for “stupid locals” who DARE to complain about the noise: The Domain was here LONG before you were (fortunately for EVERYONE) so if you don’t appreciate the fabulous sounds that are created in a public space then MOVE to somewhere “dull, boring & silent” but do NOT subject children to such a “lifestyle absent hole” - we live in the CBD to hear as much about life as we possibly can, & those of us with true decency LOVE the fact that our suburban & country friends have somewhere wonderful to come to for experiencing the multifarious joys of public events & MUSIC...
