We arrived right before the 5:42pm sunset to secure ourselves a spot by the railing before the crowd got too big. Around 6:30 we got to see around 20 penguins. It's pretty dark so they are difficult to see, but we could see them enough to enjoy it. The people were not well behaved with their camera flashes and phone torches, so it was absolutely necessary for the ranger to move the people off the pier 45 minutes after sunset (6:30pm), otherwise the penguins would have been in danger of being night light blinded while they climbed...
Read moreWe were lucky enough to see the penguins, but only because we stayed right until 6pm as the ranger asked us to leave. Honestly, the management of this pier makes no sense. It’s open from 9am to 6pm, but the penguins only start to come out around 6pm — at sunset. If you close access at that time, most people won’t see anything at all. If the goal is to let visitors experience the penguins, then the pier should stay open at least until 8pm. The current system is completely...
Read moreRecently renovated walkway at the end of St Kilda pier that has been designed for viewing of the penguins on the nearby breakwater, however as at February 2025 it is not open in the evenings when the penguins come out to allow them to recover from the noise / disruption of the building works. At this stage there’s no timeframe for when it will open at nights, so one star deducted. Makes a nice spot to sit in the sun...
