The JWW Birch Memorial Clock Tower is perhaps one of the oldest public clock tower in Ipoh. It was erected in the first decade of the 20th century, to the memory of the First British Resident in Perak who was killed at Pasir Salak by Malay warriors in November 1875. The assassination launched the Perak War of 1876 that spanned almost the entire Perak River from Pasir Salak to Kuala Kangsar. The clock tower was erected by the eighth Perak British Resident, EW Birch. He was the older Birch's son. There was a marble plaque and a bust of JWW Birch on the East face, a spot that is now empty since the 1990s. The four mural panels depict the advance of man from prehistoric times to the beginning of the twentieth century. In these four panels, you may notice that all the women depicted are seated. Some of those people portrayed are instantly recognisable. The seated statues at each corner depicts the four virtues of life. The associated historical sites linked to this tower would be the Pasir Salak memorial site down stream of the Perak River which includes the graves of JWW Birch, his close friend Captain Innes and several other graves of individuals killed in the Perak War. Upstream in Kuala Kangsar, there is another cemetery that contains the graves of other individuals killed in this local war, with another obelisk memorial there.

**A Tower of Time and Reflection – Visiting the Birch Memorial in Ipoh** Standing before the Birch Memorial Clock Tower in Ipoh feels like stepping into a page of history. Built in 1909 to honor James W.W. Birch, the first British Resident of Perak, the tower is a striking relic of colonial architecture. Located near the Ipoh State Mosque, it rises with Victorian grace, capped with a clock on all four sides and topped with a weather vane. What makes this tower especially unique are the elaborate panels at its base. They depict 44 notable figures—from Confucius to Darwin—marking the evolution of human civilization. At the top, four statues represent core virtues: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance, a symbolic reminder of values that transcend time. Being here stirred a real sense of appreciation. It’s more than just stone and symbolism—it’s a lens into our shared, complex past. I truly hope more people, especially the younger generation, take the time to visit and learn from this monument. It’s a piece of heritage that deserves to be remembered, talked about, and preserved. Appreciate you stopping by! If you find yourself in Ipoh, walking along the Heritage Trail should be one of the highlights. The Birch Memorial Clock Tower stands out apart from other structures as it serves as a reminder of a murdered British "Resident" or in other words, an appointed colonial political governor. Located in Ipoh's older sector, it is surrounded by notable buildings such as the State Mosque, several heritage bank buildings, the Ipoh Town Hall/ Old Post Office and Ipoh Courthouse. The Padang Ipoh is also within a short walking distance. The many closed food stalls located within the open square surrounding the clock tower are probably an afterthought as it doesn't seem to be integrated well. Maybe converting some of the stalls into arts and crafts outlets would be more appropriate.

Visited back in Jan. The Birch Memorial Clock Tower is a clock tower located close to the main railway station of Ipoh and the town hall of the city. The tower was created as a memorial to James Birch, who was the British resident of Perak during the British Empire. As clock towers go, this is a standard four sided tower with each face displaying a clock. The tower is painted in a simple black and white scheme, and interestingly has four spires surrounding the tower rather than on the tower itself. Most of the things to see in Ipoh are around this area, so it’s worth a quick diversion.

Great historical place to stop by. It won't take long. We stopped by at night right before 8 pm & managed to listen to the bell sounds. Not many activities can be done here. We stopped by just for the kids to experience the place & perhaps relate it to their history subject in school. By the way, got this info from wikipedia: Panel C (South) The Byzantine Empire: Constantine the Great. Islam: Muhammad (Removed because Islam prohibits visual depictions of the Prophet Mohammed).[1][5] No wonder there is a figure of a man being erased at one of the panels facing the mosque.
