Plaza Sucre es el denominativo histórico de esta plaza paceña. Más conocida como la plaza de San Pedro, es singular por el equipamiento que la circunda, una iglesia de armadura modesta con algunos elementos alegóricos en su portada correspondientes al barroco mestizo tardío simple. Edificaciones de fines de la colonia en sus otros dos frentes y lo más importante el edificio que abarca todo un manzano de la cárcel de San Pedro, nombres homólogos, tanto del recinto carcelario como de la iglesia. La plaza inicialmente una empanada casi vacía, se convirtió en el escenario de ajusticiamiento de reos rematados condenados al fusilamiento. Práctica que se mantuvo mientras duró la pena de muerte en el código penal. Curiosamente el paredón contiguo al atrio religioso, hoy construye la pared y puerta principal de una modesta escuela pública . Poco a poco, se fue armando la plaza con cuatro cuarteles con vías diagonales , selladas en su intersección con un basamento que en su cima alberga el busto del Mariscal António José de Sucre, segundo hombre de los ejércitos patriotas del Libertador Simón Bolívar. En una de sus esquinas conserva una coqueta glorieta. Actualmente pequeño lugar de esparcimiento barrial, con algunas ventas casi ambulantes de repostería artesanal. La plaza de San Pedro, uno de los lugares más conocidos de la ciudad de La Paz. Siendo este uno de los barrios más tradicionales de esta urbe y se encuentra prácticamente en el centro de la ciudad pero se prolonga hasta la conocidisima Av Buenos Aires. La iglesia una verdadera joya arquitectónica con su plazuela que antecede el ingreso. Es inevitable estar en la Plaza de San Pedro y no ver el Penal de San Pedro, que es la cárcel para la ciudad de la Paz que ocupa todo el manzano. Varios proyectos existieron para trasladar a otro lado el Penal y vecinos pedían que el área se donada al municipio y convertida en área verde, pero todo se quedó en palabras solamente. El honguito de la Plaza ha sido punto de reunión de casi todos los paceños en algún momento de su vida y se ve colmado más aún para la tercera semana del mes de junio que celebra la fiesta zonal, verbena, entrada folklórica, yatiris leyendo la suerte, juegos de azar como ruletas son tradiciones que se rescatan durante estos días de festejo y atrae a familias enteras de todos los barrios de nuestra querida ciudad. Not too much to see around St Peter's Square, however, you can go on the Red Cap Walking tour from here which I highly recommend to learn some of the history of Bolivia.

This is also a good meeting point to get to some of the obscure areas of the city (Witches Market).
