Impressive monument depicting a WWII Soviet soldier, flanked by a smaller minutiae the Russian Czar Alexander II. The monuments are surrounded by a pleasant park in which are embedded small engraved stones commemorating the presence of a large number is Soviet Russian military units that were present in Plovdiv in more recent times. The placement of this heavy colonial footprint is on one of the beautiful hills in the middle of the city. My advice to visitors is to absorb it all as the lingering historic remains of a repressive regime and recognize the darker purpose of installing the huge concrete representation of a soldier that seems to be watching the entire city. Accessible only by foot from several directions the long walk up the stone and cobblestone paths is very pleasant. Eventually reaching the top, one can reflect on the physical and artistic aspect of the park and monuments while enjoying a spectacular 360 degree view of the entire city. Perhaps one day Bulgaria will make this more of a monument to its own journey instead of a what it is. For now, enjoy the walk, the park, and the best photo op...
