In 2006 the museum was given a new name – REGIONAL NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM. It became a methodical center of the natural history museums, “Nature” departments, and the museum collections in Southern Bulgaria. The Regional Natural History Museum - Plovdiv is the second biggest museum in the country, harboring a modern exposition with a strong emphasis on nature conservation. The library at the Regional Natural History Museum - Plovdiv was established on October 5th, 1952. As more and more interested in science and research young specialists joined the museum, the library became particularly rich and resourceful. Numerous Bulgarian periodicals were published, including “Works of the Bulgarian Naturalist Society”, “Proceedings of the Tsar’s Institutes of Natural Sciences”, “Journal of the Bulgarian Naturalist Society”, “Annual of Sofia University”, “Collection of articles on nature conservation”, “Periodical of the Bulgarian Literary Society”, “Flora of the USSR”, “Flora of Romania”, as well as lots of valuable field guides and reference books. The library contains almost all volumes by Acad. Ivan Buresh, Acad. Ivan Kostov, Acad. Stefan Petkov, as well as other scientists, who dedicated their research and academic career to Bulgaria’s nature. The exchange of publications with related foreign institutes and museums was made possible with the publishing of volumes I and II of “Journal of Plovdiv Natural History Museum” and “Proceedings of the museums in Southern Bulgaria”. Since 1967, the museum has been equipped with separate premises for the library. Thus, the literature was classified in sections – Geology, Botany, Zoology, nature-related journals, etc. The museum library is strictly specialized in scientific publications, involving mainly items in Russian, Bulgarian, German, English, etc. Today, the museum library comprises...

I usually love spending time in museums and can easily stay for hours, but I left this one after less than 30 minutes - not because I wasn’t interested, but because I was deeply upset by what I saw.

The live animal enclosures, in particular, were very troubling. The turtles were clearly stressed, constantly pushing against the glass with no room to retreat or hide. The lone shark was circling endlessly in a small tank. The aquariums and terrariums overall felt cramped, poorly designed, and far too bright, lacking any naturalistic features or enrichment for the animals.

These aren’t just displays - they’re living creatures, and their well-being should be a priority. Right now, it feels more like they’ve been placed there as afterthoughts, without regard for their needs. It was genuinely heartbreaking to watch, and I left because I couldn’t stand to see them like that.

The museum does have a strong collection of insects and birds, but that’s not enough to outweigh the ethical concerns about the treatment of its live animals. Honestly, I only see potential here if there is a complete rethink and restructuring of the live animal exhibits. Otherwise, it’s hard to see a future for this place that truly respects both its mission and the animals in its care.

If there is any effort to improve conditions, I would gladly donate to support that. But as it stands, I sincerely believe it would be better to relocate the animals to a facility that can properly care for them, and use the space for something more humane and educational.

I’m sharing this with hope, that people will speak up, and that...

An excellent museum, with a vast collection of species of animals,99% of them are real and taxidermised, with a wide range of topics, from birds, forest animals, savanna animals, cave animals, rodents, insects, parasites,a very big and rich aquarium, with many many species of rare fishes that you wont see anywhere else, arctic animals,a room with jellyfish and urchins that are alive, another room with some of the most known and lethal microbes that exist (dont worry these are fake and absolutely safe),that gives you info on how the look if magnified and what is their operation in the body. They even have a beautiful butterfly room which conditions mimic those of the tropical forests so the very much alive butterflies in it can enjoy their life in a natural habitat! They also have a section of precious stones, metals and salts, with many kinds if them, which is quite rich! And if all this wasnt enough the staff that works there are very polite and helpful, especially Mina in the butterfly room! Thank you for the amazing experience!!

I really have to say I am just shocked. The museum has some parts with big collections of plants, insects and other animals. But some items of the collection were broken even though that is not the worst thing. In the middle of the museum is an aquarium with lots of fishes and even an Nile crocodile. The cages of the animals where way too small and you could clearly see that they were unhappy. Many animals were completly lonely in their cages and the cages were really dirty. The drinking water was so old, plants and mold had already grown at the bottom of the plastic containers. The turtles had no place where they could rest and I just feared they would drown any moment in the water because of exhaustion. I think it would be better to just led the animals free or find another better place for them. Instead the museum could focus more on their collection. (Some parts of the collection were just paper which was painted)

Second review pls read it and see pictures. I've already write this review whit a pictures to prove what I've said. The alive animals are in bad conditions especially the crocodile is in a small space, incapable to turn or move because the place where they put him is a small acquarium (?), totally in plastic, the water is a small amount and he has to stay there in front of people whitout any possibility to hide or go somewherelse. My 6 year old ask my "why mum the crocodile is in this small place?" he, can't move here, mum! If this is pretty clear to a kids, maybe you should start asking yourself some question too. That's is Unacceptable for a creature. Also snakes are in a small glass cages. When I saw all this, I ran outside whit my kids, almost crying. Pls take care of this creature you are a Museum to give people good culture in everyway icluding animals welfare!!!
