U samom centru starog dela grada, nedaleko od Hisar kapije se nalaze ostaci nekadašnjih gradskih zidina i kruđne odbrambene kule. Ostaci kule se nalaze u prolazu, ne lapom mestu, ali pomalo skrivenom prolazu od glavnih pešačkih ulica. Kula je bila izgrađena u doba kasne antike/vizantije, u 5. ili 6. veku. Od kule su ostali samo temelji građeni u kombinaciji kamena i crvene cigle.

Укрепителната система на Филипопол се състои от крепостни стени, кули и порти, част от чиито руини са запазени до днес в Пловдив. Тя е служела за защита на античния град. Останките от укреплението включват крепостните стени на Небет тепе, Хисар капия, Източната порта и др.
