We have just returned after a week in the " VIP Suite" where we booked all 3 rooms. The hotel|| on the surface looks fabulous. All marble and gold leaf and over the top decor.|||| It is located on a brilliant site on a hill overlooking Plovdiv and the views over the whole town are stunning, especially at night.||||The whole place could be wonderful if only the staff looked after their guests a bit better .||||The service we experienced was surly - bordering on rudeness. The breakfast was pathetic.||||No orange ( or any) juice. No yoghurt. No cereals or fruit of any description.||||Just a plate with a small piece of spam/luncheon meat and 2 small squares of cheese.||||A couple of pieces of toast and a sachet of butter , jam and honey.||||I asked for black tea and was told by the waitress that they didn't have any black tea.||||She couldn't be bothered to get it as another worker ( a young boy) overheard and promptly||||arrived with a few tea bags.||||Another morning my son in law asked for his coffee to be heated up as it arrived cold and he was told it couldn't be done as ' the coffee machine was broken'||||I had the feeling we were just a nuisence.||||Our whole apartment was very dirty indeed and was not cleaned for the whole week we were there. The shower, toilet or wash basin were not cleaned once.||||It looked like it has not had a good clean for a very long time.||||I looked under the bed and it was thick with dust, as was everywhere. Moths were flying out from under the bed.||||I noticed several black dots on my sheet and several more on my pillow!!!!||||To add insult to injury, 3 of our party left with rather dubious bite marks!!!!||||At the weekend, the whole place turns into a wedding factory with music belting out until 2am so we got no sleep on Friday, Saturday or Sunday night, when they had 2 weddings back to back.||||The whole place is ideal for weddings and I got the feeling that the bed and breakfast guests were just useful for filling beds in between weddings but were not really wanted.||||We were never greeted with a " good morning" or a "goodbye" when going out.||||In fact the staff just looked through us.||||If I return ,I will definitely stay in a Bulgarian hotel ( who are warm and friendly people) and not with Russians.||||To say I had a disappointing experience would be an...
Read moreIt's quite a while since we were here, so we have estimated the date. It was one of the weirdest places we have ever stayed. The main rooms are lovely and comfortable (the attic ones are more on the bedsit line with roof windows and no curtains) - lots of marble and kitsch. On the main floors, you share a bathroom, which is great if fellow guests realise it! It's well set up for a small group of friends to rent a section of the hotel with a seating area between rooms. We only shared a bathroom for one night, then had a couple of nights as the only guests in the whole place. Even the hotel staff seemed to have gone into hiding until a hugely noisy party for someone connected with the hotel ensured that we had as little sleep as possible on our second night. I can't imagine that these parties are a regular thing, but we would have booked somewhere else if we had known. Thankfully, the music was quieter from 3 a.m. and our earplugs almost sufficed. The final night was fine. Breakfast was OK, the service slightly odd (we felt as though it would have been more convenient for the staff and owners if we had not booked). All in all, despite the comfort and attractiveness of the surroundings, we would...
Read moreThe Old Town Residence has an air of opulence that hits you as soon as you enter the doorway and that carries through right to the rooms - from the chandeliers to the marbled arches and pillars and period decor including gold gilded mirrors and crockery, the hotel has an unmistakable charm. The rooms are huge and lavish, the bathrooms are modern and well fitted and while some of the decor may appear a bit over the top, it all adds to the charm and makes one feel "regal"! The hotel is right in the heart of the Old Town which adds to its appeal. There was a wedding on in the hotel the night we were there and the noise carried through right to the rooms but what the hell...one got a feel of what a Bulgarian wedding was all about without having to be there and I quite enjoyed the music! Would definitely stay...
