The theatre is not just a static historical site; it is a living monument that continues to host a variety of performances and events. Whether it’s a classical concert, a modern play, or a traditional Bulgarian dance show, attending a performance here is a unique and enchanting experience. The acoustics are phenomenal, a testament to the engineering prowess of the ancient Romans, ensuring that every note and word is heard clearly, even from the furthest seats.

Having witnessed the majestic Roman theatre in its full glory at sunset about 40 years ago, with all the dramatic shadows cast over the pulpitum for the full effect, I had felt the need to immerse my daughter into this archaeological marvel. It's an impressive monument to human ambition, a historic testimony to the beginnings of western civilisation. Wishing to share these feelings of awe, we arrived at the site which was regrettably impounded by a TV crew, their high-jacking intended for a production. This to all effects sealed up every possible access to the central stage and magnificent scaenae frons that would have provided the backdrop to all the glory of this theatre, with lights on massive metal frames, and cables strewn all over, a grotesque black podium covering all the central pulpitum and the staircases sealed off rudely by plastic chairs. Even more regrettable is the fact that the Municipality allowed such cultural depredation for profit, and in a UNESCO protected archaeological site belonging to all humanity. Shameless also was the fact that we had not been told anything about this at the entrance where we payed full tickets only to witness this misappropriation spoliating the archaeological endowment by degenerate crews who couldn't care less. We barely had access to the top end seats of...

Spectacular! This is the best preserved Roman Theatre in the world and located in the oldest city in Europe and what an absolute treat is was to experience this history, not just in terms of the Theatre, but the city as a whole. Its stunning, absolutely stunning. We went early October, arrived an hour before it closed and we had the whole Theatre to ourselves which was great. The views from the Theatre looking over Plovdiv and onto the mountains are breathtaking with the late summer sun. You can stroll around the entire monument which no barriers or gates stopping you from having a close up look and from up tip, you can see those incredible views.

Mobility wise, the steps actually inside the amphitheatre are really narrow and steep and reall slippery too. I wouldn't recommend going inside if you have any kind of trouble from your back downwards. That being said, don't write it off because at the ticket gate is a cafe serving hot and cold drinks and if I remember rightly, I think I saw alcohol (but dont quote me on that). The outside seating for this cafe is set up along the outside of the Theatre and you can still see everything perfectly well.

I can't remember how much it cost. About £4 each I think. It was no more than a fiver...
