Pros: the location is in Old Town and just a few minutes walk from the Kapana neighborhood.
there is working air conditioning
Cons: Summary: details below for those who want ALL the information :)
reception closes at 5pm (booking.com said 24/7)
very lackluster breakfast with no hot items
overpriced for what you get (no fridge, no large mirror, tiny TV, )
I spent more than I normally would given the extremely high reviews of this hotel. I want to provide others the details I wish I had when booking because this was one of the worst hotel experiences in terms of price/comfort I've had in a long time.
even though it's advertised as having 24/7 reception desk on Booking, the desk closes at 5pm! They messaged me after I booked letting me know this and even though they could provide video instructions to enter, part of why I book 24/7 hotels is for the personal experience and being able to ask questions. So I shortened my time on Sofia to catch an earlier bus
there are no hot items at breakfast which was a real disappointment, and no cappuccino or other specialty coffee options. You are given one croissant on your table (table they choose for you) and then you have a few selections at the breakfast buffet. No slices of anything other thsn different porks. If you typically do a large protein packed breakfast to last you the day - this isn't your hotel.
smaller issues, but given the price point.. there are no full size mirrors.. just a VERY small one on the bathroom and a slightly larger one by the door.. also no fridge in the room.
don't know why, but the television turned itself on and woke me up at like 1am in the morning (the remote was across the room by the TV).. So I just unplugged it.
I asked for the best place to go to catch a bus to Sofia. I was told the North bus station would have better choices then the South (where I had planned on going). Finally got there to find that the one bus they had going to Sofia was sold out and had to go back to the train station and take a less than comfortable train 2 hours later... Had I gone to the original station I had multiple options that I had missed by this time not the hotels fault, but there were children running up and down the street screaming from when I got back at 10pm till after 2am.. usually stopping right under my window to scream. It's an old place so there is zero soundproofing between walls, floors, etc. You will hear everything.
Overall I am blown away at the high rating of this hotel. I would say the quality of stay was that of...
Read moreWe had an amazing stay at Hotel Evmolpia. The staff were all super welcoming and attentive. At check-in we were offered homemade lemonade and given recommendations for things to do and where to eat in Plovdiv. They were able to help us with finding our way for day trips as well.
The breakfast was awesome. If you’re from a colder country with mainly imported produce you will appreciate the strawberries, tomatoes and cucumbers. I also really appreciated the variety available (savory and sweet items).
Our room was on the ground floor, so I expected some level of noise but was pleasantly surprised that it was mostly quiet. A few times, people would talk outside the window in the middle of the night and it woke me (light sleeper). But for the most part, the night life is in Kapana and there was very little activity in the old town at night.
The location is ideal for exploring Plovdiv. It’s right near the underground path to get across the main street to Kapana (restaurants, bars, shopping, etc.) It’s also not far uphill, so you don’t have to exhaust yourself to get back. Like I mentioned above, it’s across the main street from the vast majority of nightlife activity so I found the area very peaceful at night.
The staff cleaned the room every day and the free wine and cheese were a nice pick me up after exploring Plovdiv in the heat.
Some improvements that could be made: have cappuccino, latte, etc. available at breakfast have mini fridge in the room option to keep the same towels to be more eco friendly, instead of changing them every day
Overall we loved our stay. It was a great first impression of Bulgarian hospitality and we were...
Read moreWe spent three days mid-August here, and can highly recommend the location. It is a quaint little place, clearly decorated and maintained with consideration and care. The breakfast buffet was simple, but with delicious and well-chosen food. Absolute highlight for us. Prices for the beverages based on the honor-system were low, much appreciated.
The proprietor and his staff were friendly, knowledgeable, funny, and very helpful. I had a car issue that needed sorting out, and they volunteered good suggestions and their help over phone if we’d run into any trouble.
The location is perfect for Plovdiv: just cross the street in an underpass, and you are in the buzzing “Trap”-part of the town, with plentiful of food and beverage options to chose from. Or just turn the other way and explore the old town.
So we can’t highly recommend this...
