Devonian Garden has steadily and rapidly decreased in quality and gratification over the years. Notably having had removed their grand piano, which filled the space with music, art, and dance is now replaced my nothing and ultimately leaving a very drab and empty space where the beautiful unit once stood. Having recently visited the garden, as I frequent the facility in order to promote more positive mental space and coping skills, I was presented with a disturbing and unsettling experience where an unidentified guard for the TD Square mall center threatened to smash my cellular devices after being asked several times to kindly step back and away from me. As a survivor of intimate partner violence, I do ask men to step back and stand down away from me rather than get up in my personal and intimate space. At the time having had been singing, which did not constitute a public disturbance, as I spend many years visiting the gardens as singing as this is a significantly more favorable way to address my mental health. Notably, the police were called where it was confirmed that the gardens are a public space, and as such I do have the rightcand privilege to take pictures and even sing. The garden albeit are a place of rest for most, but should also be a small space or respite and reprieve from challenging and troubling life circumstances that I would not wish upon anyone. It is a garden not a mortuary where all happiness, joy, and enjoyment should go to die. TD Square mall management and security should do well to respect and observe the constitutional rights and rights to accommodation for visitors and immediate correct their actions to utilize coercion and intimidation to anything that may be deemed "subpar" and "unacceptable". It is hard times all around and I am satisfied that a space that should be condusive and inviting of music and life, and guards will consistently fail with enforcing fear mongering and oppressive tactics as where I come from, respect is given and earned where it is reciprocated. Furthermore, there is not nor will there ever be a sign posted that says "no singing in this space" as that is a freedom and right extended by the Canadian Charter. Further to this, when I elect to sing in public at no time do I play music that includes profanities or belligerent content. It is unfortunate that this is the only space of this nature in the City of Calgary that is now going in the dumps as a result of poor management and lack of care and regard to federal legislation. The last matter I wish to state that the individuals employed are security guards, not thugs, do better because with the mental health and addiction crisis as it is there is no wonder in the world for an educated professional to observe that "getting big and mean" will do nothing but make you appear as an uneducated, undisciplined, and abusive fool. Please and thank you goes as long way, asI placed my headphones back on with all the intent to keep quietly listening to my music after asking the weird man to please step back from me and keep his distance. During COVID this was no problem, so if we were mandated to maintain a six foot distance for many years in response to a global pandemic, I have full faith that this man can too follow simple instructions and speak to me from a safer and less intimidating distance. I am a small woman, whilst this man came off and appeared akin to a grumpy...
