There are two prodigious enclosed malls accessible by CTrain in south east, Calgary. Although both the malls have more or less same pricey and some economical stores, Southcentre Mall, near Anderson station, is more elegant, spacious, and attractive than its counterpart CF Chinook Centre, near Chinook station. The alluring, extra-large foyers are beautifully decorated, and there are several comfy sitting places. Also, there are a variety of small and huge kiosks that cater to various needs of people, all along the hallway. The mall supports the Calgary food bank, and there is a variety of arrestingly displayed models made of thousands of cans, on the ground floor. Each can provide the information that since 2006, this event has provided over 536,000 pounds of food to Calgarians who depend on the food bank. Kudos to the management for doing this exemplary, noble act of humanity. I was amazed to see a colossal, well-organized Dollarama (A dollar store) in the aristocratic business center where various upscale, expensive, and branded stores do business. This means, Dollarama has gained so much popularity in recent years it can afford to open a store in the high-end mall. My wife and I visited this mall to buy some exercise equipment from Decathlon that is on the upper level near the sizeable food court. The pristine clean food court is large with a lot of well-known eatery outlets serving a variety of cuisines. The mall is pretty big, so it is advisable to park near the store you want to visit; particularly, if you have to carry lots of bags or some heavy items. Also, it is good to remember where you parked your vehicle, for the parking lot is enormous, and it is not easy to locate your vehicle. An immense, beautiful, and easy to access mall is worth visiting even if you do not intend to do...
Read moreI really like this mall. But I don’t know what the heck is going on here, I was here with my family this afternoon (5-7pm April 4, 2023), shopping and having a good time until we started feeling a little ‘off’... So we go to the food court thinking maybe we should eat. But we ALL started to feel Very very dizzy, one by one, within a few minutes. We had food from four different vendors, so it wasn’t the food. We were hydrated. Our conversation was normal, happy. And all of us had this extreme nausea/dizziness/drowsy, sick sensation.
So we dropped everything and just left -I was almost ready to dial 911! As soon as we got outside and into the parking lot, we all felt fine again after a few minutes of fresh air. It was very strange and not the first time this has happened, although this IS the MOST extreme event like this we’ve had.
I hope the building management looks into this issue as my husband thinks maybe the air circulation system isn’t working as well as it needs to be, or maybe a low and slow gas leak or off-gassing of some old building material or something. But something is definitely wrong with the inside of the actual mall building.
Anyone who is disabled with sensitivities to air quality or dizziness might want to be careful. I myself am disabled and sensitive, and my Apple Watch recorded my heart beats per minute (BPM) jumping from 77 bpm to 122 bpm in less than 3 minutes while at rest (sitting) and outside it went down to 80 again. So this is definitely a measurable problem.
Really hope management takes a look into this and if anyone else has had an issue to mention it here or somewhere direct to the mall. I’ll be emailing...
Read moreSouthcentre is always great, there's a large variety of shops and you'll probably find what you're looking for when you go. The layout is simple and easy to understand, though there is always the potential to get a bit turned around if you're not used to big malls or are just unfamiliar with this one in particular. The design is nice and simple, easy on the eyes with natural light from the skylights. There's a number of options in the food court, though not as many as someone more familiar with Chinook Centre or some of the larger malls might be expecting. Lots of open space and natural light though, so a good place to stop and eat. Being in the south there may not be as many people as those from the northern and central malls may be used too, but that just comes with being a smaller location. I've never had any problems with staff or rudeness, everyone I've encountered has generally been pretty open and inviting. I have noticed that the shops can change reasonably quickly, as to the reason I'm not sure. There are some I remember from when I was a boy, and others that have been there for only a few months (or days, in some cases). But overall I find it a good mall, a great place for us southerners to hang out and find some stuff to buy. So if you like the smaller mall charm feel free to check it out if you're in the area and like shopping, or just want to people watch while having a coffee (there are three different coffee shops all in different areas, go wild). I will see about getting some pictures up next time I head out there if I remember. Update: I've forgotten all about the pictures, might still grab them...
