I went to the library today like I usually do with a friend and we pulled up our seats on the 4th floor we wernt there for even 10 seconds finishing our conversation a lady next to us was very snappy and rude when she said to us there's a child floor for being loud .. I said to the lady that we just got here and were just sitting down and asked her to mind her business and if she has anymore issues to talk to a librarian she replied with " you won't be sitting down here much longer after im done talking to them .". to that I replied "take a hike" and she said very loudly .." omg you just called me a dyke" so I get up and walk to tell a librarian because the situation has gotten out of control she follows me and cuts me off says to the librarians that I called her a dyke for no reason the librarians mouths dropped and said omg im so sorry she said that to you that is unacceptable I was so shocked that they didn't even want to hear my side of things that I went back to my seat and called a superviser on my phone and explained what happened she said that she was sorry for what went on and she will talk to the staff so time goes on and security come over and tell my friend and I that if there is anymore issues that we will be asked to leave the library for a few days ... I say ok cuz in not gonna fight with security I go downstairs to talk to the superviser and ask what happen 2 people that were sitting next to us when everything happened said that they herd the whole thing went down and herd me called her a dyke now all three people were more put together and all students that knew each other. And I am homeless pregnant and didn't have my hair washed in 2 days so I must have been lying ... I just feel like I was stereotyped and I don't think t hats okay ... I had no issue with this woman why in the world would I call her a dyke of all things bitc h would ve been my choice of word but then she proba ly would've said I called her a butch .. it's just wrong to sterotype a person for what they look like and just automatically assume that a person who tried to cover her behind wouldn't stoop as low as to use her orientation against ...
Read moreThere is no possible way to maintain the pretense that this building is actually a library. Call it a "community center," a "gathering place," or whatever you like. Currently, I am at one of the computer terminals in the Halifax Central Library on the main floor; there is a full orchestra in the performance space behind me warming up for a concert; people are streaming in; the performance space is open to the entire first floor (there are no doors); and I have no doubt that the music can be heard on the 4th floor due to the "open concept" design with nothing to absorb ambient sound (I've heard perfectly well other performances in the same space while up there trying to study). The place is often dirty, noisy, and full of ambling tourists. There are laughably few actual books. But there are plenty of trendy "media rooms," graphic novels, random TV screens, and cafe seats. Anyone who actually might want to try to "study" (which of course usually means getting on facebook or YouTube) seems able to concentrate only by wearing headphones. Now, just to be clear: I wouldn't be so critical in my review if they'd just called this place a "community center." It's just not a library. And to call it one is to act as if the role of a library in the community had been filled; my point is...
Read moreThis place is my second home! Being a newcomer i have never felt so seen, welcomed and respected than at the Central library. Staff members are humongously kind, friendly and supportive. There’s no discrimination whatsoever and everything about this place is absolutely perfect!
Would 100% recommend visiting this place, heading out to the patio and trying out coffee with muffins at Ampersand Cafe! Would 1000% recommend visiting the second floor (Children and kids play area) and checkout if you’ve little ones at your home. Central library goes beyond and far to make sure little ones feel safe, loved and valued for their being. It’s been my absolute honour to watch kids exploring their talents and potentials through play and art at this very floor.
Spring concerts are a must if you’ve a heart for music and art! I have had the pleasure of enjoying amazing musical performances by artists from all backgrounds and ages at the Paul O’Regan Hall on the ground floor! This place is a definite must on your bucket...
