Black Market Boutique — Local services in Halifax

DO NOT SUPPORT THIS PLACE IF YOU ARE BLACK/ALLY OR PERSON OF COLOR. I was racially profiled (as well as other black people that I know). I was curious since their store front looked unique but was followed around while I was perusing and could feel eyes on me the entire time. I was not dressed indecently but simply because I was black, it was obvious that I was the only one being followed around by the sales clerks. I was forced to leave because I was so uncomfortable. The items are also not of good quality and simply lean into a watered down south asian aesthetic but for the white populace (the whole model of black market). Please support other minority stores and do the work to educate yourself. Don't purchase these items if you do not know the cultural significance behind them just because they look pretty hanging on your wall or a cute jewelry accessory. I really enjoy the concept of this boutique. In fact I will likely continue to support it. However the prices are vastly inflated and keep that in mind (not sure what the profit margins are here for the store). I understand the concept is to help support the workers and I can get behind that.

The mere reason I will give this place 3 stars is because I feel uncomfortable the whole time I'm browsing around. I get people steal, but is it necessary to have a sign at every meter to not steal? Is it really necessary to have people pretend like they're doing work when I go into a corner everytime to look at what you're selling. Its certainly a little gem of a place that makes your eyes dart from corner to corner. I am a big fan of colour and cute little things.....and ooh shiny! Whether you are shopping for your mum or friends from work, there's a little something for everyone in the store. The smells and trinkets remind me of being home.

The items are reasonably priced and certainly authentic. On shopping in bazaars in different parts of Asia, you are thrown back there because of the nature how things are arranged inside.
