Review of Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal
Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal is one of the most iconic landmarks in Montreal, Quebec. This magnificent minor basilica is not only an important religious site but also a stunning architectural masterpiece that attracts millions of visitors each year. Located on the western slope of Mount Royal, the Oratory offers breathtaking views of the city and provides a peaceful atmosphere for prayer, reflection, and exploration.
History & Significance The Oratory was founded by Saint Brother André Bessette, a humble lay brother of the Congregation of Holy Cross, in 1904. Brother André was known for his deep devotion to Saint Joseph and was believed to have healing powers. He started by building a small wooden chapel, but as his reputation grew, so did the number of pilgrims visiting the site. This led to the construction of a larger church in 1917, followed by the grand basilica, which was completed in 1967. Today, Saint Joseph’s Oratory is one of the largest churches in Canada and serves as a major pilgrimage site. Brother André was canonized as a saint in 2010, further solidifying the Oratory's religious significance.
Architecture & Attractions The Oratory's dome is one of the largest in the world, standing at 97 meters (318 feet), making it a striking feature of Montreal’s skyline. Inside, the basilica boasts a grand interior with impressive stained-glass windows, religious artwork, and an atmosphere of tranquility. The Oratory also has a beautiful votive chapel filled with thousands of candles lit by visitors seeking blessings.
One of the most unique aspects of the site is the staircase leading up to the basilica. Many pilgrims climb the 283 steps on their knees as a sign of devotion. The Oratory also features a museum showcasing religious artifacts and a large garden with the Stations of the Cross, providing a serene place for contemplation.
Visiting Information The Oratory is open year-round and offers guided tours, concerts, and religious services. The best time to visit is during the summer when the gardens are in full bloom, or in December when the Christmas lights create a magical ambiance.
Final Thoughts Whether you are religious or simply interested in history and architecture, Saint Joseph’s Oratory is a must-visit destination in Montreal. Its spiritual significance, stunning design, and peaceful environment make it a truly...
Read moreWell let me just tell you I have been to a lot of churches in my life cuz I love taking pictures of churches. This is by far the largest church I've ever been in. There is like I believe five levels if not more. It's a lot of stairs. I didn't know there was escalators until after I climbed 2 levels & veered off to the left into another section. When I was looking in there that's when I seen the escalators. Don't do the same mistake I did if you don't feel like climbing stairs when you enter which is an absolute nightmare cars going all over the place it's crazy but when you pull in park in the parking lot to the right. It was almost empty there wasn't a lot of people parked there because everybody was trying to park close to the stairs. But if you park over to the right that big tall light blue clear building that's the escalators just walk in the doors and you can take the escalators all the way up. There's an elevator also. And it was hot today I thought I was going to have a heat stroke after I climb those stairs cuz it was so hot. But the church is amazing. And it was super busy today I didn't get there until almost 1:00 p.m. I would suggest going very first thing in the morning especially if it's hot out. It didn't cost me anything. Because Sundays is 2 hours for free. Which I didn't know, I just happened to be there on a Sunday. So that was a bonus probably why it was so busy haha. But it's an absolute must see. I would give this 8 stars if I could. You pay upon exit credit card or debit card only. But if you bring your ticket with you you can pay cash inside with the machine. Do not try to pay with cash outside it will not accept it and you'll just be holding a million cars...
