The Funiculaire du Vieux-Québec is a delightful and convenient way to traverse the steep incline between the historic lower and upper parts of Quebec City. This charming funicular not only makes the journey effortless but also offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

As you board the funicular, you’re greeted by friendly staff who ensure a smooth and enjoyable ride. The cabins are clean and comfortable, providing ample space to relax as you ascend or descend. The ride itself is relatively short, but the panoramic views of the St. Lawrence River and the picturesque architecture of Old Quebec are breathtaking and make the experience feel special.

The funicular operates efficiently, and while it can get busy during peak tourist seasons, the wait times are usually manageable. It’s a great option for those who may find the steep hills of the city challenging or for anyone looking to save time while exploring.

One of the highlights is the opportunity to take photos from the large windows, capturing the beauty of the city from a unique vantage point. If you visit during sunset or sunrise, the views are particularly enchanting.

The connection to the nearby attractions, such as the iconic Château Frontenac and the charming shops and cafes in the upper town, makes it a convenient stop in your exploration of Quebec City.

Overall, the Funiculaire du Vieux-Québec is a delightful blend of practicality and scenic beauty. It’s a fun and memorable way to experience the city, making it a must-do for visitors wanting to fully appreciate the charm of Old Quebec. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning traveler, this little gem adds an extra touch of magic to...

I came to add our unpleasant experience at the top booth, but to my surprise there are so many people complaining about this old man who's treating people with no respect and offensively impolite. I can't believe he is still working at this place after all this feedback.

When we arrived, we found out the ride was "cash only" so my husband went to find an ATM and get some cash while me and my daughter stood inside (It was very cold outside) until he came. The elevator was closed and so I stood in the corner waiting for my husband. He yelled at me and my daughter to get out and not stand inside. He claimed I was blocking people which I was not. I would have happily stepped out if it was a problem and he had politely asked me to do so. He just started yelling at me and I was baffled not knowing why I was being treated like that for no reason. My husband could here him on the phone yelling, who came running back to us with some cash. He was pretty upset with the old man's behavior, and he expressed it to him by asking what his name was (he said "John") and said his behavior was uncalled for. To which he did not respond and ignored us. After that experience, my daughter kept asking us to avoid taking that route, but our hotel was at the bottom and it was the quickest way to get to it especially with a child. He certainly pooped on our carnival fun day that we were having. Fyi, there's an ATM at the bottom of the funiculaire they just don't have one at the top. The nearest ATM is at Frontenac on the...

The Old Quebec Funicular was a very charming and historic way to navigate the steep incline between Upper Town (Haute-Ville) and Lower Town (Basse-Ville) in Quebec City. We couldn't believe its been in operation since 1879! Its apparently the oldest of its kind in North America. There was virtually no line up when we arrived. It offers a quick and convenient ride, taking just a few seconds to connect the iconic Dufferin Terrace with the picturesque Petit-Champlain district.

The ride itself is smooth and provides stunning views of the St. Lawrence River and the surrounding historic architecture. The funicular is an excellent alternative to climbing the steep stairs (believe me!), especially for those with mobility concerns or after a long day of exploring. At a cost of CAD $5.00 per person it was a very affordable and memorable experience.

The funicular’s glass-enclosed cabins allow passengers to soak in the scenery, making it a favorite among tourists and photographers alike. However, it got more crowded during the afternoon, so planning your visit during quieter hours is advisable.

Overall, the Old Quebec Funicular is more than just a mode of transportation; it’s a delightful part of the city’s history and charm! Whether you’re a first-time visitor (like us) or a seasoned traveler, this ride is a must-try when exploring Quebec City! It was a great way to save our steps for the up an down down hilly...

The Old Quebec Funicular is a must-do for any visitor to Quebec City. This historic funicular railway connects the Upper Town (Haute-Ville) to the Lower Town (Basse-Ville) in just a few minutes, making it a great way to see the city without walking up the steep hill. See the St. Lawrence River and Lower Town from an interesting vantage point as you travel up or down the cliff face at a 45-degree angle. The main entrance of the funicular is in Louis Jolliet House, located at 16 rue Petit-Champlain. The funicular was built in 1879 and was originally powered by water. It was converted to electricity in 1907. The funicular has two cars, each of which can carry up to 60 people. The cars travel at a speed of 2.5 meters per second, and the ride takes about 30 seconds. What you can do - if you do not want to climb 'just 59 steps', use this [ Fee is Cash only 5 dollars, doesn't matter UDS or CAD- it is 5 dollars] and enjoy the view from Dufferin Terrace The funicular is a great way to get a bird’s-eye view of Quebec City and its rich history. It is the oldest funicular in North America that is still in operation. The funicularbird' s-eye has been featured in several movies and television shows, including “The Day After Tomorrow” and “The Umbrella Academy.”

It is not every day you get to see one of these and even ride one. One of the last of its kind, it takes you from the bottom of Quartier Petit Champlain to the upper boardwalk and Chateau Frontenac. You can take the stairs - however this is much nicer, especially in the winter. The place was packed during the weekend, everybody was cramming to get on and the views we got were spectacular as we climbed up. It is four dollars per person, one way (up or down). Anybody under 117 centimetres ride free of charge. My main complaints are with the customer service. The girl and the man working at the bottom of the Funiculair (Quartier Petit Champlain side) were very nice and helpful. The old guy at the top (Boardwalk/Dufferin Terrace side) was a different story. He was restless and annoyed, rude to anybody who was trying to pay or get on the Funiculair. I even heard him curse under his breath while some people were trying to get on. Overall it is a fun experience! If you can and want to go, you should. Just maybe avoid the wise guy working at the top (or the bottom! maybe they switch 😀)
