This is a self-learning-through-reading type of museum. Take the time to read all the posters.
There are 2 floors. The train cars are not wheelchair accessible but there is an elevator to the 2nd floor. The walk-through of the passenger train car and the engine were a walk back in time. The dining car has the menu under the glass table top. The tiny kitchen... oh my! Also, there is a $2 engine simulator.
The 'yard' was closed, but there was ample enough to see inside. We happened to be upstairs at the time the Rocky Mountaineer viewing train went by!
There is a train table for children to play at, but it is my opinion that this is a more adult museum. The gift shop is more child centered with books and conductor hats.

Read moreNice community museum. It's hard to compare when I've been to much more impressive railway museums (York, UK) but it was a good way to spend an hour and it really set the context of the railway for Revelstoke. The curation was quite wordy so our 8 and 10 year old disengaged quite quickly, I'd recommend bringing dollar coins for the diesel simulator as that's potentially quite fun for children. The outside area was closed during our visit so I can't comment on that. Slightly disappointed about the inside of the passenger carriage, I was expecting a replica of the decadent interior but it was just a few chairs you might find in a cafe. The main locomotive is impressive in its scale but i learnt more about that by eavesdropping a guided tour than any of the boards. Overall worth a visit on...
Read moreWhat an awesome museum! Our family enjoyed the rich history right in front of our eyes. Murals, photographs, real railroad tools, videos and actual coach's to tour made this a great museum. There was even an engineer on duty to explain the workings of the steam engine! PLUS, a railroad simulator. My family enjoyed several 4 minute rides conducting a train down the tracks. The smiles were huge! There is no doubt that the beautiful rail coaches and wonderfully preserved implements that this museum has on display will bring history back to life for you. This was an affordable and fun stop for my family, not too far off the highway, located on a frontage street in Revelstoke that can easily serve as a nice break in a long road trip, or be added to a vacation...
