My experience... well, I was excited. Like a child before Christmas. I was going to the Berkeley Theater to see Paul Gross in Domesticated.. wow. I have always enjoyed Paul Gross and to see the Berkeley Theater was new for me. Unfortunately, I may have picked the wrong play or was it the venue? I sat in the third seat from the front, the the left of the stage, rows C21 / 22. Close enough I thought, to be able to hear the actors... you see, I am hearing impaired. Although I had my aids full blast, there was no way in HELL I was able to hear what they were saying.. I heard bits and pieces, but my heart sank, when I just could not hear what they were saying! My husband, who is NOT inflicted said, if he had been further back, he would not have heard them as well. Is this the fault of the theater? perhaps the actors? I find the Downstairs Theatre, particularly intimate and enjoyable for plays and performances that are powerful but unusual, to be the perfect setting for hidden gem productions.
The theatre itself is very accessible and convenient for a small theatre. Parking is available across the street and it's very close to public transit. Simple concessions, such as chips, almonds, and soft drinks are available.
The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. Ordering tickets online or by phone is easy and tickets can be picked up at the box office minutes before the performance. I have never had any administrative problems with ticket ordering, whether making a purchase or...
Read moreThe production of "Little Dickens" was as ingenious as it was hilarious. What a novel format is the small stage with its cast of marionettes, all eccentric and spontaneous around a story line loosely based on a bawdy version of "A Christmas Carol".
The Berkeley Theater venue is intimate and interesting; actually a repurposed gas works. We have been to a number of productions there and have always been delighted. The staff are friendly and helpful, the sou d and lighting all effective.
Available parking seemed to be diminishing in the area. With persistence we found underground parking in a nearby office building and after a nice lunch in a pub arrived early for the...
