I took awhile after my appointment to decide whether I wanted to write a review of my experience at the East Van Brush Salon or not because I had mixed feelings about my visit. The salon itself is quite nice but honestly the vibe of the staff really didn't sit well with me. It felt utterly judge-y and unwelcoming immediately during both the consult and the actual appointment. I paid a TON of money to have my hair done (which I don't necessarily mind because I value my hair but it did seem excessive to me since they charged me for the single pump of root spray and heat protectant they used, and the "cut" portion of the appointment was just average and took literally 5-10 minutes yet cost an eye-watering $250+). I will say my highlights were done very well and I was happy with the results. My biggest issue was the energy and vibe of this place- you know that feeling where you can't quite tell if you are being insulted by little comments or snide looks? I felt like that the entire time and left feeling kind of like a sucker for having paid so much to feel like I was being subtly insulted and judged the whole time (for what, I do not know, I would imagine I am their ideal clientele but that doesn't even matter- NO ONE should be treated this way). I am surprised there are only a few other reviews mentioning the cold weird vibes of some of the staff and certain stylists. I agree with another reviewer that it felt like my stylist believed I should be grateful he was even deigning to touch my hair. I considered coming back because the highlights were so well done, but I think I will take my business elsewhere because again I felt so unsettled by the little jabs and weird snobby energy during my appointment, and honestly I just received a way better haircut at another salon in the city without the high school...
Read moreEdit: This complaint was followed up with a few hours later and the situation was resolved. Customer service this time around was prompt and genuine and lifted my disappointment from earlier in the day. Much appreciated!
Phoned in yesterday to see when the earliest appointment was available for a haircut. Told the girl on the phone it was to be my first time there and wouldn’t mind seeing a senior stylist. I was grateful to be told there was an appointment available the following day. She confirmed the appointment with me, Friday 20th at 2pm with senior stylist Justine. Took my credit card info to hold the booking and let me know that cancellations within 48 hours would be a 50% charge and made a point of letting me know I was within that timeframe already.
Today I arrive after taking a half day from work, to be met with blank stares, no booking and no apologies- just to be frankly told that my appointment was actually Wednesday and that it must have been a miscommunication. Unsure how you can miscommunicate something that was booked yesterday for the following day with a friendly reminder I was within the 48 hour period already.
No apologies, not even an attempt at remedying the situation to see if they could squeeze me today or any day sooner and no taking responsibility. Front desk girl needs a lesson in customer service and maybe how to use the...
Read moreI’ve been seeing Emilie at Brush Salon since 2017 and not only is she a genuinely awesome person I’ve loved getting to know over my time in her chair, she’s an expert beyond her years of experience. She helped right the ship after a brassy / patchy moment on my journey from brunette to blonde, helping me get to and maintain the colour I wanted. When I decided I wanted to head back to a more low maintenance look and ease back to my natural brunette due to the pandemic, she worked her magic in a way that let my bright beachy blonde grow out to a sun kissed brunette without the need for multiple appointments AND without any obvious “I’m 3 months overdue for a colour appointment” lines in my hair. She understands the impact colour has on hair and won’t push your hair towards damage just because you asked for something in particular.
Beyond Emilie, everyone I’ve come into contact with at Brush has been friendly and welcoming. It really seems like a place that is intentional in hiring, both in regards to skill and personality. I’ve recommended Emilie and Brush in general to friends in need of a stylist change and...
