At least four people passed out unconscious, presumably from dehydration or heat exhaustion, at the show. I assume there were many more cases, as these four instances occurred just within a 20ft radius of my person. In some of these cases, security and first aid failed to arrive for up to five minutes, and simply watched from the near-stage area as people shouted for help.
This was the most mismanged venue I have experienced. Upon entrance to the venue, the security requires you dump any drink you have on your person. This is standard procedure in most venues, and would be fine if there were adequate water stations available to help people access water during the show.
However, I could only see one water station, containing about 4 water taps, which was placed about 50 metres away from the performance. Contrast this to the 6-or-so alcohol tents that surrounded the crowd, the venue clearly encouraged people to purchase liquor. I have worked as bar staff and have no issue with the serving of alcohol, but when you are confiscating water from people entering the venue and restricting the availability of water for people at the show AND promoting alcohol sales, an antidiuretic, it is exceptionally obvious that some people will be dehydrated.
It also baffles me that the door policy requiring the confiscation of liquids is not simply to restrict alcohol consumption, as demonstrated by the volume of alcohol tents saturating the venue. This policy seems to be in place only to encourage the sale of liquor at the venue itself, but in the process restricts the availability of water.
This month is set to be the hottest month on Earth in 120,000 years. In a crowd of thousands standing out in the sun, some people are bound to experience heat stroke. The mitigation seems relatively simple: have more water taps have more First Aid responders available to care for people consider an intermission mid-way through the show. This not only allows people to escape the crowd and cool off, but encourages people to purchase merch, food, and drink from venues.
I am not sure if this experience is the usual practice of the venue, but from my eyes, the venue prioritized profits over human...
Read moreI attended the Boygenius show here on July 28th. The actual show was great, but getting in to the venue was a nightmare. The PNE Amphitheater was pretty obviously under prepared and disorganized. I had a VIP ticket that only showed as VIP after I added it to my phone's wallet. No information about where the VIP section was, entry, ect was sent prior to the show. We were told to queue separately for VIP in the morning (just after I got there, around 8:30 I think) which ended up not mattering since our line funneled into the one next it when we were let into the merch/food area. Every time we asked staff/security questions they either didn't know or gave different answers. At different points we were told we would have early entry into the merch/food area, separate queues into the actual amphitheater, that the VIP section was only sectioned off by a small metal barricade and at one point that there was no actual separate VIP section at all. It was frustrating and stressful to say the least, especially for those of us who had been in line for hours. On top of this the queue to get into the amphitheater from the merch/food area was a massive wall of people crammed together for 30 minutes against a barricade and turned into a stampede when the barricades were opened. To be clear I don't think any of this was the fault of any individual employee/security. This was absolutely a management and communication issue. It seemed like nothing had been communicated to the staff and security working the event. At no point could we get a straight answer about anything. Overall a disappointing experience in terms of the venue, especially after paying...
Read moreMy partner and I attended Billy talent last night and on our way out there was absolutely no organization for the bag check as well as awful security which caused an extremely drunk woman to physically put her hands on myself and my partner. My partner was outside the massive line while I was in it and this girl who wasn’t even in the bag check line, barged through a ton of people while yelling at everyone so I told her she needed to wait her turn or go around everyone if she wasn’t waiting for bag check, she plowed into myself and two young guys so I yelled at her to calm down and she got physical with all three of us. My partner was trying to plead with the security officer to help us and she did absolutely nothing while this belligerently drunk woman was trying to assault me. We got ourselves out of the situation with help from the two guys mentioned earlier but we are so disappointed with the lack of support from security and organization on amphitheaters part. There absolutely needs to be some sort of limit on alcohol when there are that many...
