This Opera about Carmen is a drama about love between a soldier and a Gypsy woman that involves smuggling and tragedy ..Carmen is lovestruck and a femme fatale at the same time.. the arias tug at the heart and were brilliantly expressed by the performers…The Queen Elizabeth Theatre is a wonderful location for the Vancouver Opera to stage this drama of Carmen..the seats are very comfortable and the staging of Carmen was a collaborative experience between the dramatic roles of the performers and the excellent staging..the orchestra was very much a creative partner in this dramatic opera of Carmen….The Habanera is identified as Carmen’s most famous aria , this is sung by Carmen when she first appears on stage in Act 1 and it is represented apparently many times in pop culture…this aria brought me to 100 % attention and I was present in a special way throughout the performance…so pleased to be here to support Opera...

We attended the 88th birthday celebration of Philip Glass and a pre-show for their ongoing Opera series called flight, a unique story about the experience of a refugee and an immigrant stuck at an airport for over a decade. We left with a deeper appreciation for the crisis and a richer understanding of the story of resilience and individual sacrifice than what we came with. It was a true honor!
