Heard great things about this place and that it's very authentic, so I had to try it! Walking in definitely had a different vibe than your typical restaurant, it reminded me of what a Mexican diner would feel like. It's very casual and a place you could quickly eat and dash.
I ordered ¼ pound of the mixed veggies and was pleasantly surprised. Typically you'd expect cheese or dairy based toppings, but there weren't any. It came with 4 tortilla's, ¼ of mixed veggies consisting of squash, potato, spinach and a few other bits and toppings. It's a very hands on experience where you literally assemble your own taco's, which was messy but fun. The cabbage and sauce added some freshness to the tacos, while my friend was a big fan of the beans (I also agree). I liked how they supplied 3 salsa's that had different flavours and spice levels - I added them all to my taco and it was super yummy. I'd definitely recommend this as a great vegan option, even if you're a meat eater and wanna try something new! I'm a fan!
We weren't full afterwards so we ordered the guac and chips. The guac was great, had a strong lime taste and well seasoned, however, we found the chips to be way too oily. You can see in the picture that the chips were shining with oil. I've had deep fried tortilla's at different places where it wasn't this oily... so unless if you like extra greasy chips, I wouldn't recommend it.
Overall, I'm a fan of the vibe and simplicity of Chancho. Their taco's were great and I'd come back for them in itself. The chips, not so much, but I'd consider ordering a side of guac with my tacos in the future. It's also decent value for...

Good :
A restaurant where you are treated like family! The portions are great for the price you are paying The dishes come with different types of salsa and pickled cabbage The carnita was perfectly cooked and presently in a delightful way This is one of the few spots in the city where the owners actually love and care about the people visiting the restaurant and the food they make and it shows not only in the customer service you will receive but also in the presentation of the food There are some vegetarian options if you are not able to consume pork. One of the unique spots in Vancouver where the tortillas are made fresh.
Bad :
Nothing
Improvement/ Suggestions:
I would love to see different types of meats on the menu preferably chicken.
Do I recommend this place? Would I come back?

Read moreI recently visited Chancho, that had received rave reviews from many customers, but unfortunately my experience was quite underwhelming. Despite the positive feedback, I found the food to be lacking in several areas.
The first disappointment came with the tortilla chips, which were overly oily and greasy. They lacked the satisfying crunch and taste that I typically associate with fresh and crispy chips. This was particularly frustrating because chips are often a staple appetizer in Mexican cuisine and can set the tone for the rest of the meal.
Next up was the pork shoulder, which was the main entree of my meal. Unfortunately, it was lacking in flavor and failed to live up to my expectations. As someone who has tried many authentic Mexican dishes in the past, I was surprised to find that this particular dish at Chancho didn't hit the mark. It felt like something was missing in terms of seasoning and overall taste.
As I reflect on my experience at Chancho, I realize that perhaps Mexican food is no longer my favorite cuisine. It's disappointing to come to this realization, especially after hearing such positive reviews of the restaurant. However, I believe it's important to be honest about my experience and provide an accurate assessment of the food and overall dining experience at Chancho.
In conclusion, while I had high hopes for Chancho, I ultimately found the food to be lacking in both texture and flavor. The oily tortilla chips and bland pork shoulder left much to be desired. While others may have had a different experience at Chancho, for me it fell short of my...
