The Tam Kung Tin Hau Temple on Blue Pool Road is an interesting temple ground to visit in the Happy Valley area of the city. Opening hours are 8am to 5pm daily. The temple was originally located near the Hong Kong Sanatorium but was relocated here as part of urban development works at the turn of the 20th century. In 1901 it was rebuilt by the Hakka people upon the large perch over what is now Blue Pool Road. Entrance is at street level, you have to walk up a short staircase before arriving at two separate temples, the first and larger being dedicated to Tam Kung (Sea God - Lord Tam) and another smaller temple up another short set of steps to Tin Hau (Goddess of the Sea). The temple terraces are nicely decorated with manicured plants, porcelain guardian lions, vases and other items one might associate with Chinese temples. Within you will find hanging lanterns, ancient drum and bell and shrines setup with deity figures. There is an English panel within the larger Tam Kung chamber with historic information related to this temple. Tam Kung becomes very busy with worshippers during the Tam Kung Festival held on the 8th day of the fourth lunar month each year. Overall, this is a nice temple ground to see if you plan to spend time in Happy Valley. Give it 5-10 minutes of your time when passing by and then continue on with other intended sightseeing you may have in this area of the city.
