One of the interesting landmarks to see when visiting Tai O is the North Lantau Obelisk which was erected just northeast of the village. The small obelisk monument is located up a hillside just north of the Yim Tim Mangrove Forrest. There are signs pointing the way and only a short ascent to climb.
The monument is now situated in front of a few trees with the sea in the background. On its base is a worn and difficult to read engraving. Research reveals that it is reference to the Convention between the British and Qing governments recognising the extension of the Hong Kong territory, whereby the New Territories including Lantau Island was be leased to Great Britain and full under British administration in 1898. The monument was erected here four years later in 1902 by the British Navy.
In the end, the obelisk monument is a minor attraction that is somewhat out of the way at Tai O. However, it is something that history buffs in particular will find interesting and worth making the time to see when visiting...
