Read moreA defining aspect of the Tai O on Lantau Island are the presence of centuries old stilt houses lining the inlet running through the historic fishing village. These are unique structures that look like something out of an old pre-colonial era history movie, not something one expects to find in 21st-century Hong Kong.
The stilt houses were built above the tidal flats and are interconnected, forming a continuous flow of residents above the sea. There is a small river that winds through Tai O, separating the stilt houses on both sides. A couple of draw bridges are in place allowing village residents and many daily tourists who visit to walk through the stilt house village to see these genuinely unique residential structures.
From the bridges, you can take fine photographs of the Tai O stilt houses. From here you can see the wooden stilts jutting out of the mud banks holding up the house structures. The stilt houses are maintained quite well these days.
All in all, the stilt houses are the major highlight for visits to Tai O. They are easy to enjoy and appreciate and something you will long remember seeing during visits...

There is a boat ride service near the pier (need to purchase the ticket) which bring you to tour around the village however exploring the village by foot is equally sufficient that you will get similar experience with this place. There are stalls selling local snacks (eg. Fish balls, charcoal-bbq dried shrimp, etc) which taste great. The people here are generally friendly however I encountered an old couple who were criticizing ironically the ‘Put Chai Ko’ that I purchase from the stall next to them as ‘rubbish’ and ‘even the dog won’t eat it’, which to me this is kind of rude. However I presume they are jealous because there is no one visiting their stall. If you are visiting this place, you may also consider to include the visit to Ngo Ping village/ Tian Tan Buddha to make it a day trip in Lantau island. Despite there are a lot of tour packages offered online, you can make it a free& easy trip by yourself easily which save...
