It was an honour and a pleasure to join the Tai O food tour held by Tai O Heritage hotel because we got to try different joints in the lanes of Tai O.

There were three groups so each group tried different shops marked on their routes.

Tai O is a lovely town on water which is themed as a Chinese Venetian with stilt houses on water as well as being famous for fermented prawn paste. Our first stop was Tai O Snacks which are famous for Chinese pizzas and fried crusteans. Then we tried this famous bakery a few doors away for the sugar and cinnamon puffs which are called Chinese donuts. The appearance is basically the same as the Tai Cheong donut but they taste amazing because they are light with a crispy surface and the amount of sugar is just right. The puff is soft and chewy like a fried dough stick but it is light and airy like...

My husband and I hiked to Tai O in the sweltering heat, and this bakery was our first stop. I bought over HK$100 worth of food and drinks. My husband, whose sunscreen had melted into his eyes, politely asked the owner if he could have a napkin. The owner flat-out lied and said, “We don’t have napkins.” When my husband pointed out that there were napkins clearly visible on the counter, the owner proceeded to lecture us, saying that napkins are not free and that we should carry our own.

I respect Hong Kong’s business environment, but a shop that refuses to give a single napkin when needed—and does so in such a condescending tone—is hands down our worst...

During my visit to the vibrant tourist spot, Tai O, I had the opportunity to taste the famous Sata Andagi, locally referred to as "沙翁", in a renowned shop.

I was fortunate to avoid the usual long line, adding to the excitement. The Sata Andagi was a symphony of textures, with a crispy outer shell and a fluffy, cake-like interior. Simple ingredients, including flour, sugar, and eggs, were transformed into a satisfyingly sweet treat.

This delightful culinary experience was a highlight of my visit, making the Sata Andagi a must-try for anyone visiting Tai O. It embodies the local charm in every bite, leaving me eager for...

This was my favorite part of my visit to Tai O fishing village. The donuts were freshly made and they have this nice eggy taste. The crust was crunchy and sweet, while the inside was airy and soft. It was perfect to pair with a scoop of icecream. I also bought some mango mochi, I can't say that the mango was the sweetest because I had tasted better mangoes in the Philippines but the texture of the mochi is quite nice, it is soft and chewy. The mango mochi is also served cold, very nice for the hot weather.

One does not simply visit Tai O without a visit to the Tai O Bakery. Must try their special donuts, Tai O Donuts. At HKD13 each, they are freshly made, batch by batch. If you arrive and the basket is empty, they will ask you to line up while they make new batch. The wait isn't too long, maybe 5-7 minutes. Once it comes out of the fryer, it is then rolled in sugar. Mmm enjoy them while they're still warm! So light, fluffy and airy! Good for sharing too.
