Shanghai’s famous 城隍庙 (Chenghuang Miao or City God Temple) is a cultural gem that offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s spiritual and historical roots. The temple’s intricate architecture, rich with traditional Chinese design, creates a serene and captivating atmosphere. It’s surrounded by a bustling market filled with local snacks, souvenirs, and vibrant street life, making it a perfect blend of heritage and modern energy. The temple itself is peaceful and beautifully preserved, offering insight into ancient customs and beliefs. Whether for prayer, sightseeing, or exploring local culture, 城隍庙 is a must-visit destination that captures the soul of old Shanghai.

A very lovely place of worship, as a tourist, please make sure that you’re not invading the privacy or disturbing the rituals of the devotee’s present there. Please make sure not enter into the various temple premises without seeking permission of the concerned authorities. All in all a very beautiful place where you get to see a glimpse of traditional chinese religion. The temple is near a very beautiful palace/garden. The whole of area is surrounded by a very big bazar. Do try the humongous mangoes they sell right outside the temple, very tasty indeed

Temple turned tourist destination, this is a one-stop-shop for all things that non-Shanghainese people go to Shanghai for. Where the old and cultural meets new and developed, this temple stands as a reminder to traditional Chinese values and architecture in an ever developing and modernising city. In some way it's a lie - hypermodern in its own way with how we see it as a touristic hotspot. It's a crowded place with lots of food and various shops in the heart of Shanghai, so the location is very convenient.

This is a beautiful place and also an expensive tourist trap. My opinion is to avoid coming here if you don't like crowds and don't wanna get overpay for basic things.

Architecture was beautiful. You can tell it's well kept and renovated regularly - I saw a man sawing wood and painting. The surrounding area (a block away on the right side) was deserted on the other hand - so empty and rundown compared to this temple.

Very overpriced everything. Food, drink, souvenirs, and whatever you want is available. It's just going to be significantly more expensive than outside this area.

There's ladies wandering around trying to herd you into stores. It's annoying. They will follow you and grab your arm (a woman touched me, I can confirm). Don't follow them and ignore them. This tactic didn't work this time but it usually does.

There were so many people. Extremely crowded area. I saw about 10 separate tour groups going on and i definitely didn't see all of them. Lots of...

Chenghuang Temple evokes many memories for the older generation. They recall the ceramic sculptures of the four heavenly kings, and the impressive figures of gods, ghosts, hells, and bodhisattvas that adorned the temple. These cultural relics were all destroyed by the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution. The temple has been transformed into a commercial street. The glazed tiles, walls, and facades still retain some of the old charm, but the interior has been renovated and rebuilt to suit the market demand. The older generation may also remember the cobblestone road that used to cover the street, but it was replaced by a smooth pavement by the shortsighted leaders of that era. They thought the uneven cobblestones were an obstacle. The historical heritage and civilization were lost. The younger generation has little interest in the past. They only care about the brands, the food, and the entertainment. This is a regrettable loss that cannot...

A kulturális forradalom idején bezárták, a nagyterem hosszú évekig ékszerüzletként működött. 1994-ben visszaadták a taoista egyháznak. A templom hátsó csarnokában kínai csillagjegyeket ábrázoló szobrok állnak, ahol a látogatók felajánlásokat tehetnek.
