A super busy bazaar where if you’re looking for a hype for souvenirs like magnets and take home snacks this place can serve you well. Some stalls offer similar items at a lower price so take your bargain skills to the test at the right ones. If you’re one who loves peaceful old ancient towns in China then this will be rather overwhelming with modernity. Entrance is free but you do have to pay to enter Yu Garden, a seemingly interesting place built during the 1500s Ming emperor times. It wasn’t open then so no sneak peek involved. Sitting in the middle of a lotus pond next to Yu Garden entrance is Hu Xin Ting, the oldest surviving tea house in Shanghai that has gone through meticulous refurbishment to bring the place back to life.

The shopping area at Yu Garden is particularly beautiful at night, with traditional Chinese-style architecture illuminated by carefully placed lights, creating a picturesque atmosphere. The intricate rooflines, lanterns, and wooden façades are visually striking and make for a memorable evening stroll. However, despite its visual appeal, the area feels heavily commercialised and geared primarily towards tourists. The abundance of souvenir shops, themed eateries, and modern retail outlets detracts from any sense of authentic historical atmosphere. Instead of evoking the charm of an old Chinese marketplace, it can feel more like a curated tourist attraction rather than a place with a genuine connection to the past.
