Shanghai Pudi Boutique Hotel — Attraction in Shanghai

Despite the negative reviews, I picked this hotel online because of its vicinity to my conference venue. I arrived with low expectations, thinking I won't spend much time in there, besides sleeping.||||I arrived late at night. The front desk guy was friendly, spoke good enough English, answered all my questions and no issues.||||Room was exactly as I had seen in previous reviews. Enormously large, very dim, dark furniture... almost surreal. The ambience resonated with either an upper class brothel (dim lights) or a scene from a horror movie (painting of "red" babies over the bed). It was unsettling...and I was alone, in a foreign country...||||But then, I started to actually look at what is on offer: ||A huge bed - clean, fresh comfy linen, soft pillows, big TV directly in front, bedside tables with phones, alarm and lamps.||A clean kitchenette - kettle, tea/coffee, a well equipped mini-bar, microwave, safe, robes with umbrella, kimono, slippers.||A large working desk - ergonomic chair, notebook, power points, phone and good wifi||A massive bathroom suite - sitting space, shelves, bathrobes, weight scales, his/her vanity with close up mirrors, full range of amenities incl. toothbrushes, a separate shower, a two-person spa bath and adjustable TV screen facing spa and toilet...!||||So once I put my "fears" away, I actually enjoyed staying here. No noise, no dust, no bad smells and everything worked. I just wished I had someone else with me to take advantage of...

Prior to my trip, I had a quick look at some photos and reviews online of this boutique hotel. Pictures looked pretty decent and decided to book it for 3 nights stay in October 2019. When I told the taxi driver I need to go to this address, he could not find the place and dropped me at a cross road which I was completely lost around midnight with 2 large suitcases. I had to ask around and finally found the hotel tucked in a corner which is not visible. The room was large but the condition was poor. Stained carpets, filthy work desk chair and scary artworks. Lights were dim in the room and scary for single lady traveller. I have wanted to check out instantly but could not as was told the hotel will still charge me for the nights booked. All in all it was a traumatising 2 nights stay ever in my life. I managed to move out after that. The breakfast place was on the 8th floor but the lift only take one to 7th floor. Good value hotel located in the french quarter. Its a quiet location next to Fu Xing Park. Apart from a few bars and local eateries there's not much happening after 10pm. You would need to head to Xin Tian Di for nightlife, approx 10-12mins walk away. What would make this a great place to stay is an in-house restaurant. Hotel staff are courteous & friendly. We had a large room on the fourth floor overlooking the main road. The bed is comfy and of emperor proportions. Bathroom again large was well appointed, but missing a power shower. As with most boutique hotels there are plenty of downlights (to create moody atmosphere) but wattage was a bit lacking! Hotel looking a bit tired in places now and can do with a makeover.
