The museum is located just a 5 minute walk north of downtown in a well renovated building that was once Costa Rica's jail (turrets now accompany the general castle feel). Although not as high tech as a children's museum one might find in highly developed countries, there is a lot to see and signage is almost all bilingual Spanish/English. Sections include dinosaurs; exhibits on electricity and water; Costa Rican history and traditional economy (explanations of traditional banana and coffee production) space (featuring items from Franklin Chang a CR born astronaut who shares the record for most space flights) of anyone ever); farm animals; vocational play places (bank, etc) and a crazy new house with uneven floors (playing with perspective etc). Some exhibits need a bit of maintenance, but most seem well maintained. Food may be brought in freely, but there are food options inside (cafeteria, Oteros pizza/ice cream outside).

There were lots of volunteers when I went.. Not sure how many (if any) are bilingual. If you're patient with reading things and want to explore the whole museum, you can easily spend the better part of the day with small children. (My 5 and 8 year old love to go, but may not be as much fun for ages 14+ if they're not interested in...

It's always a good time at the Children's Museum. It's a good way to spend a day out with your kids. There are lots of different exhibits and the staff is always helpful and friendly. As always, the dinosaur attractions are a huge hit with everyone. I noticed there have been a few changes, making the museum seem as if they are in a transition period. Some exhibits have been moved or taken away entirely. And the newer exhibits are just OK. However, there are still plenty of traditional and popular exhibits in existence to enjoy, so there is still lots to see and do. We love the interactive exhibits the most, and this time around, my kids took part in the canopy activity. Because it's currently vacation period for the kids, there are a lot of extra activities available for kids of all ages. All in all, like I said, it's a fun way to spend the day. Be warned about the parking situation though. It is expensive! And in my opinion, a...

GET THE MAP! it’s only 300 but they said it was just in Spanish so I didn’t want to waste the paper. The place is HUGE so you really do need it, or you’ll miss out on some things. A wonderfully interactive museum of everything for children, it’s also fun for adults. I clearly didn’t read things properly and thought it was a museum about childhood in Costa Rica, but I still loved every minute. The staff are AMAZING! They’re proactive and keen to show you around. I don’t speak Spanish and they still tried, at one point they went and found a couple of staff who are confident with their English to take me around the tilting house. They were so kind and enthusiastic, I wish I’d got their names. Some of the older exhibits have English translations, unfortunately they’ve disappeared from the newer ones, it’s a shame that they’re taking that away as it makes it more accessible. It is so affordable and you can spend an entire day there!

We could have spent the whole day! We didn’t have a lot of time, as we decided to stop in before a San Jose city tour. There is so much for kids to see and do here. My 8 year old loved it and gets so excited when she’s telling people about all the things there are to do. Give yourself half a day to spend here. We went on a Wednesday morning, it wasn’t busy at all. There were a couple of school field trips there but it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Most of the learning exhibits in the different rooms are in strictly Spanish, but if you use google translate it’s easy to understand the different sign. There are staff in each room to help with the different exhibits, they also speak English to help the non Spanish speakers.
