All I can say is AMAZING! Today’s experience with Cara driving to her magical property outside of Manuel Antonio was unforgettable. First sharing informative conversations on the drive with Cara so effortlessly answering questions for us ranging from Costa Rican culture, history, and art, to her sharing her own love of the life she’s made since adopting Costa Rica as her home. Then arriving at the property housing the open air building where we learned about the cacao plant and how chocolate is made. Natalia described the process, then involved us all, together, in making chocolate truffles right from freshly roasted cacao beans. But there’s more!

Next we traversed the fairly newly made stairs made, I think, of concrete mixed with native stones. These stairs dropped down the side of the property I’m guessing 150 feet to the racing river below. Under the watchful eyes and outstretched arms of the young family members with me, I navigated those deep steps, even those wet ones and others with slippery moss. Once at the bottom and at the edge of the racing river, a few steps to the right brought us to the beautiful cascading waterfall. The younger family members were quickly splashing in the natural pool at the waterfall’s end. We had ample time to enjoy the experience before ascending those same steps, a more physically taxing effort than going down.

Last but not least, we walked next door to a neighbor’s home. It was what we were told is a typical Costa Rican, modest home, with a fenced but open air kitchen and a few bedrooms walled in. Hosted by a woman and her adult daughter there was a culinary treat waiting for us. Cara said we’d never be the same after we ate this meal. And she was right. On a wood cooking countertop stove was a large pot of the most delicious chicken I can ever remember eating. Along with white rice, black beans, mixed vegetables, AND, tortillas, fresh salsa , and the best fried plantains ever. To drink was fresh papaya juice.
