The Church of St. Nicholas is a medieval gem, dating from the late 11th or early 12th century and is an important part of Croatia's early Romanesque churches. It is among the best preserved medieval churches in Split. It features a Greek cross ground-plan with a rectangular dome supported by columns taken from Diocletian’s palace. This and other similar acts led to serious unfortunate destruction of that magnificent palace. Although usually closed, it opens on St. Nicholas' feast day, December 6. In 1219, it was dedicated to St. Nicholas, the protector of ships and crews, and has been maintained by Benedictine monks and hermits over the centuries.
