The Hussite Museum in the old town hall building was founded in 1878. In addition to the permanent Hussite exhibition, you can also visit the medieval underground corridors and the Gothic Hall with the Jan Žižka riding statue (unfortunately, the Gothic Hall is closed due the reconstruction until 2020). The exhibition "Husite" takes the visitor (in ten halls) from the roots of Hussite to the development of historical memory of Hussitism in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Old Town Hall is one of the most important late Gothic monuments in the Czech Republic. It´s construction began probably in the early 16th century, when the city council let down three houses on the western front of the square. The author of the palace and the whole building of the town hall is the stonemason Wendel Roskopf, probably from the Lužnice. This is evidenced by the inscription and the stone mark on the littoral urban emblem with the year 1515-1516. Roskopf completed the construction of the town hall around 1521. In the second half of the 17th century the building (damaged by previous years of war) was modified in Baroque style according to the project of...
Read moreA good museum showing the history the Hussites and Tabor.
There is a surprising amount in this museum and if you have an interest in the history of the Hussites, this is the place for you. There are quite detailed exhibits showing much of the history. Under the museum lies a series of tunnels that can be travelled through with a guide. However it is worth noting that the guide spoke only Czech and for someone who is not a Czech speaker, the tunnels might be less interesting, although...
Read moreVery interesting and illustrative museum. Also suitable for children as there is a lot to touch and experience for yourself. Unfortunately, not everything is in English. The guided tour through the catacombs was also only in Czech with accompanying material to read in many languages. But the staff make a lot of effort to overcome any language barriers and the whole museum conveys Czech national pride and the importance of the Hussites for the Czech...
