Typically in USA, our cemeteries are quite open, so it was quite interesting to experience this one. It's surrounded with so many trees and thickets. Tall, short, bush like with buds, and even miss shapened by mother nature. I found interesting and even some beauty in many of the statues. Was neat to see how old some of the grave stones were, thinking and wondering about what that person may have experienced in their life. However others say it's a beautiful and relaxing place to walk around, but I beg to differ. There is not much for gardens in here compared to other parks around Copenhagen areas I have been to, seeing as how this is a cemetery. Many people in these reviews have seemed to find just the very few plots of gardens there are in this massive cemetery and made it out to be more of a park when it isn't. What you will see when you enter is 95% trees, thickets, and grave plots. A lot of the small gardening done is poorly organized, which did not make me feel relaxed, but rather a bit stressed. And seeing many knick knacks all over trees so near families graves was extremely gaudy. If you're looking for more floral and "lively" scenery, I recommend better visiting the...
Read moreIt’s a bit weird to make a review of a graveyard. The customers certainly can’t complain. But “Assistens Kirkegården” is much more than a cemetery it’s also a park full of life and a monument to several of Denmarks most prominent citizens. The cemetery was build around 1760 after a lot people had died from an epidemic and there was a lack of space for the dead inside the old city Walls. So this graveyard “assisted” in the burials and hence its name. Hans Christian Andersen is by far the most famous person buried here. Niels Bohr, the father of quantum mechanics and Søren Kierkegaard who is considered the greatest existentialist author both lies here as well. When the weather is nice you find people having picnic here which might sound a little bizarre but it seems quite natural actually once...
Read moreThis one big multi-dimensional graveyard will send you on a sacred journey. A walk through here is so sweetly melodious. There are many joggers at sight, that look like they are hurting themselves more than benefitting from running.
In here you are able to spot plump petals and sweet pear nectar. Lavender bushes and soft trimmed grass. The trees are very diverse which is a unique treat. In this European metropolis flora & fauna you can witness red squirrels and common crows living from rubbish bins, this ecosystem is both fascinating and amusing, and as a frequent visitor of this cemetery I can see how these city animals are thriving in urban landscapes by making smart choices....
