Finally made it to KUMU, though since 3,5 years living just across the street, like 100 meters away :-) Anyways... i really am glad to say it kinda positively surprised me, as far the exhibitions go. I've heard so many very different reviews, most of which were somewhat pessimistic. My favorites were the "classic floor" with some well known Estonian and Saksa/Estonian artists and contemporary art exhibition containing among others also few very colorful Italian artists, though the last mentioned is only temporarily available here. So hurry up, definitely worth your time! As why i gave only 4 stars?! Well, the last floor really disappointed me. There was some weird video exhibition about Body Culture. I didn't find anything Art-like about it. There was nothing new, nothing that humanity didn't see or experienced before. I find it tasteless when someone tries to reinvent a bicycle instead of creating something own. Oiled bodies rubbing against each other do not require talent, sorry. Just the fact that an Art Museum that big, could not come up with an alternative to that, is a minus point, but again, its my...
Read moreI strongly urge anybody who visits a new country (especially the capital city) to check out their art museum
Tallinn, Estonia is not an exception to this, as it really does an incredible job in telling the story of the people and eras through its collections
You can plainly see and understand how each style and artist was inspired and why it had to happen that way
While the country has been sovereign for short spans of time, there is a strong urge in every single painting, sculpture and object to form a national identity, to grow roots in the common counciousness of the people
Not only that the exponats themselves are extremely beautiful, but the staff of the museum did an incredibly well job from structuring this discrete works from discrete artists in a way that forms a compresive and captivating journey into the estonian culture
Bonus points for the fact that the museum building in located in a very nice park and is a piece of modern architectural arts itself, in its circular form
Truly, a must see for...
Read moreThe Estonian Art Museum is located in an extremely interesting building in the middle of a beautiful park. Its art exhibition is split among 3 levels with level 5 currently being in renovations. Level 3 hosts incredible and stunning art pieces including the heads of multiple known people and their voice in a choir. Level 4 also hosted nice paintings however the last part of the exhibition was utterly horrifying.
It included absolutely disgraceful, disgusting and unsettling displays of humans running around naked. As well as other terrifying displays which make you feel sick (black liquid coming out of a mouth of a human etc). It was gore and uncomfortable for a normal human being.
I been to many modern art displays before and nothing ever compared to what I have seen there. I do not recommend bring children to the last part as it will leave them with...
