With its wholly uninspiring outdoor area, its overly warm stuffy indoor area where straight-to-radio dance music constantly blares and its faded yellow walls made all the more yellow by the lighting, Taverna del Gallo Nero has all the charm of an IKEA coat rack. Combine this with the excellent food they serve at inexplicably low (I’m talking money laundering grade) prices and the good sense they somehow had to install a children’s play corner where otherwise not a single thought to curating an atmosphere had been given - this odd little place has all the makings of a perfect hole-in-the-wall. Except for the service. Somehow it took us about 1,5 hours to get through a meal consisting of two primis and a children’s pasta, followed by two scoops of ice cream and a canneloni. I can’t emphasize enough just how damn good each of those dishes was (yes, even the kiddy pasta had at least some flavour) but in no world except for maybe a home cooking show should this have taken anywhere near that long. It took them about 15 minutes to bring out the two scoops of ice cream and there was nary a person in the whole restaurant at the time or indeed at any time during our visit. It also did not help that unlike other tables, we were not served bread with our food (come on, guys, we have two toddlers here) or parmesan (had to ask and wait a good few minutes). For some reason they also didn’t fully clear away our plates after the main even though we clearly asked them to take away the unfinished children’s dishes (these were cleared only after dessert was served and other tables were cleaned).
I normally never rate down for service. If the food is five stars - and it was - the score is five stars. Usually service is never bad enough to put a damper in the final experience as long as the chow is fab. But I am making an exception for Taverna because I really did find it harder to fully enjoy what could have been a marvelous evening because of these issues.

Me lähenesime kassale täis ootusi ja soovi nautida värske kohvi aroomi. Kuid isegi pärast kümme minutit kassas ootamist oli meie kannatlikkus tõsiselt proovile pandud. Tundus, et aeg aeglustas oma kulgu ja meie ootused ainult kasvasid.
Lõpuks köitis meie tellimus ühe töötaja tähelepanu. Tellisime kaks kohvi kaasa, lootes kiiret tellimuse täitmist. Kuid selle asemel, et professionaalset teenindust, oli meid ootamas külm ja ükskõikne reaktsioon.
Kassas olev teenindaja väljendas oma rahulolematust meie tellimuse üle näoga, nagu oleksime midagi saamatut palunud. "Oh, see võtab kaua aega," kostis tema rahuldamatu vastuväide, hoolimata sellest, et palusime vaid kahte kohvi. Minu viisakas täpsustus jäeti tähelepanuta ja vastuseks saime ainult külma vastukaja.
On tragiline mõista, et meie soov lihtsa tellimuse saamiseks jäi personali arusaamise ja soovi piiridele. Selle asemel, et hoolitseda külaliste ja nende mugavuse eest, seisime silmitsi tähelepanematuse ja tagasilükkamisega. Me ei saanud isegi nautida tassitäit kohvi, lihtsalt sellepärast, et meid ära jäeti.

Мы подошли к кассе, полны ожидания и желания насладиться ароматом свежесваренного кофе. Однако, даже после десятиминутного ожидания у кассы, наше терпение было подвергнуто серьезному испытанию. Кажется, время замедлило свой ход, а наши ожидания лишь нарастали.
Наконец, наш заказ привлек внимание одной из сотрудниц. Мы запросили два кофе с собой, рассчитывая на быстрое выполнение заказа. Однако, вместо профессионального обслуживания, нас ожидала холодная и равнодушная реакция.
Девушка за кассой выразила свое недовольство нашим заказом лицом, словно мы попросили что-то несбыточное. "Ой, это будет долго", - прозвучало ее недовольное возражение, несмотря на то, что мы просили лишь два кофе. Мое вежливое уточнение было проигнорировано, и в ответ мы получили лишь холодный отклик.
Трагично осознать, что наше желание получить простой заказ оказалось за пределами понимания и желания персонала. Вместо заботы о гостях и их комфорте, мы столкнулись с невнимательностью и отторжением. Нам даже не удалось насладиться чашечкой кофе, просто потому, что нас отшили.

It's not only the "proximity" of course: what matters as well is the Taverna's being practically "inside" our beloved park of Kadriorg! Otherwise, it has got everything we enjoy as far as restaurants are concerned: excellent food, pleasant atmosphere and good service, all - for quite a fair price. Please do note: this restaurant is in no way chic- nor posh etc. It is simple, but cozy and convenient, and the wine cellar is good! This is an Italian restaurant with all traditional pasta dishes and pizzas, but the place also has quite a menu apart from same!
