I was thoroughly impressed by the detail and modernity if this museum, moreso by the free entry! (Thank you, Finnish taxpayers!) You can spend a good amount of time here discovering the history and culture of Finland.
The tour is very DIY and you learn more if you took the time to dig into the details, like reading their Finnish newsletter casually placed at the entrance but is essential in explaining everything u see there.
Unlike many museums which encase items behind glass, this museum encourages interactivity. You'll find yourself playing an old school juke box with Finnish tunes, seeing Finland in it's early days through VR goggles and walk into a traditional Finnish home to smell its mustiness instead of just looking at it from a distance.
You will leave with a better understanding as a beginner into Finnish History! I believe the lovely ladies at the information counter would have been happy to explain more had I asked, but the glögi...
Read moreI don't visit museums, but i had free time on a sunday afternoon, so i looked up any free places online. I found this Helsinki City Museum. Amazingly enough it was free. There was a christmas sales day 18.-19.11.2023. There are four floors. The museum is about the history and evolution/development of Helsinki. There is a reception and informaation desk, just in case you need help. Despite many floors this was a pretty small place. However, i really enjoyed the possibility to peek in to the past of Helsinki. There was no big crowds, it was silent enough and interesting enough. The place was tidy and well kept. There are restrooms just in case you need one. If you have nothing to do and don't mind spending about half an hour looking into the past, this is a place to visit while wandering around Helsinki. Compact and well selected photos and items,...
Read moreThis museum is just beside the main square and is perfectly priced at free lol. I will say that it may be a bit lacking in displays, but the second floor and the "Time Machine" on the bottom floor were great. The fourth floor is all about fitness, so this might be interesting to most. The second floor is certainly best (third floor - nothing to see). The city model is great, and other display areas are very interesting. The first floor has a great free locker area for people visiting, areas for children, a cafe, and a small gift shop. Make sure you don't miss the "Time Macine" by the locker area. Very neat interactive map - old photo projected on the wall and then transforms to current day as you walk along the wall. Overall, it might not be a jaw-dropping venue, but it does have some interesting local historical...
