The history of this UNESCO Canal is incredible. I’m not going to spoil it, get a boat ride for 10€, it’s absolutely worth it. They also have an English translator explaining the history of the canal. It’s amazing to watch and then experience (if you are on the boat) the lock mechanisms, that move the boats between these locks, which are splitting the canal into different heights.

Probably the most scenic and beautiful canal in the world. And the Carcassonne is the jewel. A perfect canal to cruise from Castelnaudary to Port Cassafieres and down to Narbonne. Stunning views the whole way, great French villages to explore, and amazing restaurants and beaches along the way. Don’t forget the miles of vineyards and wineries to sample.

This UNESCO World Heritage site links two seas: the Mediterranean and Atlantic. It’s a few hops away from the train station and we enjoyed a laid back afternoon watching the boats.

Carcassonne's greatest attraction is the medieval castle, it's walls are 1.9 kms long and has 52 massive towers. It was the first castle to use hoardings to pour down hot liquids onto troops attempting to scale it. In 1355 even those medieval English warriors failed to capture it. It was restored by Eugene Vollet-Le-Duc at the beginning of the 19th century and is one of the most visited monuments in France. Some parts of the film 'Robin Prince of Thieves' starring Kevin Costner were shot in Carcassonne castle. The beautiful canal du Midi passes through Carcassonne and it's port is very popular with people who hire a cruiser for their holiday on the...

If ever in the Carcassonne area don't miss the bike path that runs parallel to the Canal du Midi. We did Carcassonne to Trebes (round trip) and the path is safe as it never merges with the cars. The surface is sometimes inconsistent (from pave to grail, from wide to narrow), but for the most part of the trail it is very easy, even for kids. Have kids see the locks system raising the boats that sail the canal and they won't...
