The 51 gargoyles (or grotesques) on the western façade are dummies, in that they are decorative rather than drain spouts. There are, however, functional gargoyles on the lateral walls of the church and the walls of the apse.

According to the account of the monk Étienne de Bourbon, the original gargoyles were in place for only a short time: they were removed around 1240, following a fatal accident. A usurer was killed on the church forecourt as he was about to get married: a stone figure representing a usurer became detached and fell on him. His colleagues organised the destruction of all the dummy gargoyles on the façade, except for one at the upper right corner that survived until the 1960s, when it was replaced. Some 19th-century engravings do not show this gargoyle, but it can be seen in photos taken before 1880. The gargoyles at the sides and the back of the façade remain.

The dummy gargoyles which today decorate the façade, and which represent human beings, animals and monsters, were made in 1880-1882, during the restoration of the...

This is a spectacular visually impressive church of Our Lady of Dijon. I think I'm more inclined to conclude that this is more stunning than the Cathedral of Dijon! The western façade is a masterpiece with its incredibly beautiful three portals which correspond to the tripartite sections of its nave. And with its superimposed galleries and triple frieze that holds fifty one false gargoyles (the gargoyles don't drain water as its traditional usages). Also impressive is the the Jacquemart clock on the south tower of the western façade. Inside it's even more spectacular with beautiful nave and two aisles and a stunning organ buffet. Most notable monument here is the statue of Our Lady of Good Hope also was known as "the Black Virgin". Overall, it's a blessed experience being inside this magnificent church and a welcoming ambience for all ages and...

Famous Church on Dijon ! More famous for its good luck charm the “Owl”. The place had a whole walk dedicated to reach the place marked with brass follow-me signs pasted on walkways. Inside the church was the sacred chapel and the quiet you’d find in any Church. Beautiful experience.
