Liberation Square — Attraction in Dijon

One of the most beautiful square and the central square of Dijon. The setting couldn't get any more spectacular than this in a hemicycle shape which addresses the palace of the Dukes of Burgundy absolutely fittingly. It had gone through different names until Liberation Square in honouring the liberation of Dijon in 1944. You couldn't ask for a more royal settings. I was holidaying in Dijon in January and the square still had the remnants of the Christmas market and carousel. Once cleared it really opens up the place to its normal majestic settings. Absolutely worth visiting. On a trivial history, it used to be known as Place Royale, Place d'Armes, Place Imperiale, then back to Place Royale, Place du Mréchat Pétain until 1940. There used to be an equestrian statue of Louis XIV in the middle of the square until 1792. This site is listed as a protected world heritage site. Worth exploring as it's a pedestrian thoroughfare square and one gorgeous place to see...

This is the heart of Dijon and there's a lot going on here. The Palais des Ducs et des États de Bourgogne of course is the main attraction here. A really impressive palace and obviously made by the motto: bigger is better. Which in this case it is.

There are loads of restaurants on site as well, most of them facing the impressive palace. We had lunch at "Le Pré aux Clercs", which had great Steak Tartare. The Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Grand Théâtre de l'Opéra de Dijon are other main attractions here. And from here it's just a short walk to many other major sights like the Rue Des Forges, Place Francois Rude or the Église Saint-Michel.

There are some chain stores and souvenir shops as well. Out of these, the Au Duché de Bourgogne is worth a look. Good wine and other deli products.

The Square is just a nice place to be and to see. And definitely a must-do...
