The port is the historic and symbolic heart of the city. Originally established around 600 BCE as the harbor of the ancient Greek colony of Massalia, it later became a strategic center for Mediterranean trade and military operations during the Roman Empire. Throughout the Middle Ages and early modern period, the port was a key departure point for Crusaders and a hub for maritime commerce. It underwent significant redevelopment in the 18th century. Although most commercial and industrial port functions moved to the newer Grand Port Maritime in the 1840s, the port has remained a vital civic and historical focal point. This historic old port of Marseilles is a must visit place for anyone visiting this most important and busiest port of France. The history surrounding port is amazing, going back to 600 BC! There are so many shops, restaurants, hotels and other attractions all around the port area. If you are into seafood, you have so many options around the port area. The old port is packed with hundreds and perhaps thousands of sail boats, quite the spectacle to see from the shore or on a boat ride out from the port. Would highly recommend walking all the way around the port area on all three sides and also taking at least one boat ride from the port, so you get the whole perspective and...
