Located in the heart of Menton at Place de l'Église, the Basilique Saint-Michel Archange is an architectural and spiritual gem that captivates from the moment you arrive. Built in 1653, this Baroque Roman Catholic basilica is a testament to centuries of faith, artistry, and historical preservation.

Visiting the basilica for the first time was a truly memorable experience. As I approached the church, the striking façade stood proudly against the sky, with its bell tower visible from many parts of Menton. Climbing the steps to the square where the basilica is located felt like stepping back in time. Though the narrow, winding streets of the old town can make it easy to lose your way — можно заблудиться — the sense of discovery adds to the charm.

Inside, the basilica is no less impressive. The Baroque interior is richly adorned with religious artifacts and details that reveal the care taken in its preservation. One of the most fascinating features is the 17th-century pipe organ, which adds both visual grandeur and musical history to the space. The atmosphere is serene, making it a perfect place for quiet reflection or simply to admire the craftsmanship of the past.

What struck me most was how lovingly this historical monument has been maintained. Everything from the paintings to the marble details speaks to generations of devotion and respect.

I highly recommend visiting the Basilique Saint-Michel Archange when in Menton. Whether you're drawn by history, architecture, or spirituality, it offers a unique and enriching experience. It is a proud symbol of Menton’s cultural heritage and one of the most beautiful churches I’ve seen in the...

The Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel was built according to the wishes of Prince Honoré II of Monaco. He wanted a "big and beautiful church to Menton" and made this wish by the Genoese architect Laurent Lavagna.

Construction began May 27, 1619, but the real work only began in 1639. In 1653 the monument was officially over and under the cult of Saint Michael the Archangel. It is May 8, 1675 that the bishop of Ventimiglia dedicated this church while the prince Ludwig I was there. A bell tower 53 meters high was built in 1701 by architect Emmanuel Monaco Cantone. It was not until 1819 that the facade was completed in the style of the seventeenth century.

Originally this church building was a church, and do not acquire the title of Basilica in March 1999, following a decree of Pope John Paul II to reward the church Menton for its dynamism. In 2006, the square was renovated of 170m ² with no less than 250,000 pebbles! It took a year of work to meet the methods implemented in the eighteenth century is taken into account to implement the central motif. This baroque church welcomes every year more than 100,000 tourists who come to admire its facade, which restored its square are represented the arms of the Grimaldi and its impressive ramp. Finally, in summer, at least in August, the front of the Basilica hosts the Classical Music...

The Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange de Menton is a stunning minor basilica and Catholic parish church located in the historic center of Menton, France. Built between 1639 and 1653 under the guidance of architect Lorenzo Lavagna, it was commissioned by Prince Honoré II of Monaco and is dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel.

This beautiful basilica showcases a predominantly Baroque architectural style, featuring a basilical plan with three naves. The façade, completed in 1819, is adorned with Corinthian columns and a triangular pediment, adding to its grandeur. Inside, you'll find a richly decorated interior with a striking polychrome marble altar and a statue of Saint Michael.

The basilica also houses an Italian-style organ from 1666 and is known for hosting an annual classical music festival in August. It was declared a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1999 and is recognized as a protected historical monument, classified in 1947 and inscribed in 1961.

Whether you're interested in its architectural beauty, historical significance, or cultural events, the Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange is a must-visit...

Definitely one of the coolest spots in the South of France! You can find this amazing architecture in Menton, right behind Plages Des Sablettes. Climb the stairs to get to the Basilica of Saint Micheal Archangel. Menton was by far one of our favourite little towns to visit in the French Riveria!

‏Very beautiful spot located in the heart of Menton after 2 minute walk from the beach. ‏Old Town Menton is a must see...Streets whose brightly coloured yellow and orange walls protected you from the blistering sun. A magnificent view of the bay in its entirety and the village cascading down the hillside. Moreover, The people of Menton were super friendly appreciating those that appreciated their hard work in making thus a fabulous tourist spot. ‏I highly recommend visiting the Basilique Saint-Michel Archange when in Menton. A beautiful and historic Baroque basilica in the middle of Old Town. The climb up was short, but there were a decent amount of stairs. It is well worth the trek, as the small square in front of the church has stunning views of the Mediterranean and the surrounding landscape. The interior is highly detailed and ornate. The building appears to have limited hours. When I visited, it was only open Monday - Saturday from 15:00 to 17:00 (3pm - 5pm). If you want to go inside, be sure to check the hours beforehand. Be sure to also check out Escaliers, which is the scenic zigzag stairwell connecting the basilica to the main street below. I feel this church is a perfect touch on a visit to lovely sun-kissed Menton!
