Sculpture of Medea - The monument to the hero of Greek mythology, the Colchis princess Medea is located next to the astronomical clock and the sculpture of Neptune.

The statue was unveiled on July 6, 2007 by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.

It is believed that the Colchis civilization once existed on the territory of Adjara. Medea, the king's daughter, enchanted by his love for the Argonaut Jason, helped her steal a golden ram talisman for the welfare of her people. The couple escaped from the ship Argo, which is depicted in the statue. It is also well known that Medea was a doctor and pharmacist of her time, which is why science was called medicine in her honor. Today, the statue of Medea with its gilded golden talisman is a symbol of Georgia's wealth, prosperity and connection with the...

Very beautiful symbolic statue. A true homage to Greek mythology, for those who enjoy theese kind of legends Colchis (current Georgia) was an ancient kingdom from which a Greek king married a woman. Then he changed his mind and picked a new wife which tried to get rid of her stepchildren. Their mother attempted to save them by sending a golden ram across the Black sea to catch them but her daughter fell off the ram as it was flying back and only the son returned to Colchis. This is where the story of Jason and argonauts and their quest to recover the fleece begins as they venture into Colchis to recover this relic. Medea is a figure that helps them get it. The whole square is lovely! :)
